The San Francisco 49ers made a minor roster move on Wednesday, adding quarterback depth while also evaluating help along the offensive line.

According to the NFL transaction wire, the 49ers signed quarterback Adrian Martinez to their practice squad. Martinez had spent much of the season with San Francisco before being released on December 9. He briefly joined the New York Jets’ practice squad but was released on Tuesday, paving the way for his return to the 49ers.

Martinez initially joined San Francisco’s practice squad on August 27 after a stint with the Jets last season. He was promoted to the active roster on October 2 to serve as Mac Jones‘ backup while starting quarterback Brock Purdy worked his way back from a turf toe injury.

Martinez entered the NFL as an undrafted free agent with the Detroit Lions in 2023 after a collegiate career split between Nebraska and Kansas State.

In addition to the quarterback move, the 49ers also worked out two offensive linemen: guard Iosua Opeta and tackle Aiden Williams.
