New York Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has declined opportunities to name a starting quarterback for Sunday’s Week 16 contest versus the New Orleans Saints. Veterans Tyrod Taylor and Justin Fields continue working back from injuries.

Regardless, the correct decision would be and is Brady Cook.

The 3-11 Jets have nothing to lose as they start building towards the future. Taylor is on an expiring contract and isn’t guaranteed to be back in 2026. Fields is technically under contract, but qualifies as a likely salary cap casualty after losing his starting gig to Taylor.

On Wednesday, Glenn decided to make the smart choice in Cook.

Of the three quarterbacks, Cook is most likely to return to New York in 2026. As a rookie undrafted free agent, he also possesses more untapped potential compared to Taylor and Fields, who have had plenty of opportunities to display their worth throughout their respective careers.

Cook made his first career start in Week 15, a 48-20 defeat to the Jacksonville Jaguars. The former Missouri standout completed 22-of-33 passing attempts for 176 yards, one touchdown, and three interceptions. He threw a first-quarter TD before any of his turnovers, and showed a willingness to compete in a less-than-ideal situation.

It’s incredibly unlikely that Cook is the Jets’ future franchise QB, but Taylor and Fields aren’t, either.

Perhaps Cook could at least be a long-term solution at backup quarterback. Give the rookie an opportunity to compete and play himself into a future role.
