The New York Giants will host the Minnesota Vikings at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, on Sunday as they seek their first victory since Week 6.
The Giants have lost eight consecutive games, while the Vikings have won their last two. Sunday’s contest will be Minnesota’s third straight against an NFC East opponent.
Despite holding a 6-8 record, the Vikings are slight road favorites, with the Giants listed as modest home underdogs for this Week 16 matchup.
Here are three reasons for cautious optimism heading into Sunday’s game.
Vikings’ rushing attack
The Giants’ defense has struggled against the run all season and has been disappointing overall. This matchup, however, could play in Big Blue’s favor. The Vikings run the ball on only 40.97% of their offensive plays — a rate that ranks 25th in the league. Minnesota is likely to lean heavily on its passing game and talented receivers, which could allow the Giants to have one of their strongest performances against the run.
Opportunity for turnovers
Because the Vikings pass at such a high volume, they have thrown a league-high 20 interceptions this season. The Giants should be prepared to capitalize on any mistakes and generate takeaways.
A more favorable spot in the schedule
Sunday’s game marks the Giants’ second straight matchup against a sub-.500 opponent. From Weeks 5 through 13, their opponents collectively posted winning records. It is fair to say the Giants have faced a demanding schedule thus far. Playing at home — where both of their wins this season have come — further helps their cause. While the Vikings have three times as many victories as the Giants, this remains one of the more winnable games remaining on New York’s schedule.
