Many Arizona Cardinals mock drafts have the team taking an offensive lineman, such as Miami’s Francis Mauigoa or Utah’s Spencer Fano. But what about a quarterback? Bleacher Nation’s Matt Rooney has the Cardinals drafting Alabama signal-caller Ty Simpson sixth overall:

“6. Arizona Cardinals: QB Ty Simpson – Alabama

The Kyler Murray era seems pretty over in Arizona as the Cardinals continue to spiral. With potentially a new head coach and GM (though not guaranteed) next year, a reset with a first-round QB seems like a logical choice.”

Like every NFL team, the Cardinals have several needs to address. And they could use help at quarterback with Kyler Murray expected to leave this offseason.

His Career Thus Far

Ty Simpson attended Westview High School in Martin Tennessee. During his senior year, he passed for 2,827 yards and 41 touchdowns against three interceptions. He also rushed for 862 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Simpson was rated a five-star recruit coming out of high school. He received college offers from schools like Clemson, Tennessee, and Ole Miss. Yet, he ultimately committed to Alabama.

In 2022, Simpson redshirted his freshman season at Alabama. Bryce Young was the starter that year. Simpson then served as a backup the following two years.

Simpson was named the Crimson Tide’s starting quarterback in 2025. This season, he has thrown for 3,269 yards, 26 touchdowns, and five interceptions while completing 64.3 percent of his passes. Simpson has had several big-time games like his 382-yard, four-touchdown performance against Wisconsin. He also threw for 340 yards and two touchdowns versus Vanderbilt.

However, Simpson has struggled late in the season. In the SEC Championship Game loss to Georgia, he completed only 19 of his 39 pass attempts (48.7 percent). He’ll look to bounce back, though, in the College Football Playoff as he tries to lead Alabama on a deep postseason run.

Should the Cardinals Draft Ty Simpson?

This offseason, the Cardinals will probably look to move Kyler Murray. The two-time Pro Bowler is injury-prone and perhaps needs a change of scenery. There should be plenty of suitors like the quarterback-needy Las Vegas Raiders and New York Jets.

Backup Jacoby Brissett has filled in for Murray, who has been hurt most of this season. Although Brissett has performed admirably, he isn’t Arizona’s long-term answer at quarterback.

With that said, it would be wise for the Cardinals to draft Ty Simpson. He could eventually become the face of the franchise. Meanwhile, Brissett could serve as the bridge quarterback until Simpson is ready to take over as the starter.

Simpson has a ton of potential. He possesses a strong arm, poise, and flashes of pinpoint ball placement to thread tight windows. Despite rushing for only 98 yards this season, he is athletic enough to make plays with his legs. Simpson could eventually replace Murray as the Cardinals’ franchise quarterback.
