Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton can make NFL history on Sunday.
He can become only the second coach ever, joining the legendary Bill Belichick, to win 13 games in a season at least five different times.
Belichick is regarded as the greatest coach in the history of the league, so it’d be incredible company to keep.
But Payton is no slouch himself, winning 13 games while leading the New Orleans Saints in 2009, 2011, 2018 and 2019. He’s got the current Broncos at 12-2 and riding an 11-game winning streak.
After practice on Friday, Sean Payton was asked about reflecting on personal achievements given how much he’s already accomplished.
“I’ve never had like an office or anything, and so some day, in storage we’ll put out all the stuff,” Payton said.
It’s good deflection from Payton, saying all his accolades are to be celebrated at a different time in his life. And with the 10-4 Jacksonville Jaguars coming to Empower Field at Mile High on Sunday, there’s no time to relax.
“It’s like that song where you’re sitting at a poker table. We’re not counting any chips right now. We’re just trying to continue to win and the fun part about it is being around a young team that’s experiencing a lot of this stuff for the first time,” Payton said.
Payton went on to say this current Denver roster keeps him feeling young. Winning will do that — and this is the most winning Broncos Country has seen in a decade.
Sean Payton is focused on the task at hand, even if the rest of us will celebrate him once he reaches yet another 13-win (and hopefully more) season.
