LIVE UPDATES: Momentum swings in Alabama’s direction after TD and OU special teams miscue
Below is what you need to know before the Sooners and Crimson Tide kick off
It’s on high stakes. It’s win or go home. It’s gonna be *** game that every play has tremendous magnitude. It’s Oklahoma versus Alabama for the 2nd time this season, but this time it’s the college football playoff. The Sooners already took down the tide 1. Sooner defense, one of the best. Can they do it again? Crimson is everywhere and the pressure is at its breaking point. Your live KOCO college football countdown starts now. Live inside Oklahoma Memorial Stadium on December 19th for the college football playoff, one of the biggest ball games ever played in that building, one of the biggest stages ever played at Oklahoma. Memorial Stadium as we count down to the college football playoff in prime time on Friday night. What *** show we have for you tonight. What *** treat it is to be *** part of this and *** special occasion here at the University of Oklahoma. The flyover was spectacular. Special moment. We’ve got reporters all over Campus corner in and around the University of Oklahoma as we welcome you in. I’m Brian Keating alongside Hannah Hoover. This is the uh KOCO College Football Countdown. We are live high atop Volaire Pizzeria here on Campus Corner. I tried to set it up with the college football playoff stuff, but, um, what *** moment and what an opportunity here for the University of Oklahoma. It is special. There’s nothing better than Friday Night Football, and to do it for the college football playoff in Norman at home with home field advantage, man, the Sooners. are primed for *** really spectacular game and we’ll see what they can do against this rematch. Alabama, can they do it again? Can they beat the Crimson Tide twice in the same season? Nobody has done that since 1893, 1893. Brian, that is like over *** century, and I think it’s *** crazy stat too, because I mean how many times do they actually repeat games? You, you don’t get an opportunity to do it much, but the Crimson Tide hadn’t lost twice in the same season to the same team since the 1800s. Oklahoma can change that tonight. We’ve got big stories we’ll be following you, uh, throughout the next 30 minutes, um, starting with the Oklahoma defense. I brought it up at the beginning. It’s one of the biggest games ever played inside Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, and the status of the OU defense, I want to start with what I think is the biggest player storyline of the night. It’s the return of our Mason Thomas, that big old defensive end. He can get after the quarterback. And if OU’s going to beat Alabama tonight, it’s the defense and getting our Mason Thomas, boy, what ***, *** treat for Oklahoma. It’s game changing because Don’t get me wrong, this defensive line is *** unit. It is set with or without him, but it’s just going to make them that much stronger because this is *** dangerous team. SEC scoring defense, they are number 1, 13.9 points *** game, number seven ranked nationally. Alabama is number 3 in the SEC. So look, they’re excellent as well on defense. So we’re talking about Oklahoma’s defense right now and They are locked and loaded in every single way, gritty to the core and hard to kill, as they like to say. They, they, they have been. Um, Armason Thomas got hurt in the Tennessee game on that, uh, fumble return for *** touchdown and had to play. He will play tonight. Um, I think the other question for Oklahoma, talking about the defense, but complimentary football. John Matt, yeah, it’s been up and down throwing the football. Can they run the football is *** big question. Look, that’s *** huge pressure point, I think. For this offense because John Matt really since that hand injury has really shifted and you haven’t seen just *** whole much from him. Explosive plays, not really *** factor. So gets the run game going specifically from him is *** pressure point to me. 7 touchdowns on the year for him. He leads the team in rushing touchdowns, but look, we’ve got to see more from John Mattier. Here is the quarterback of the University of Oklahoma Sooners. Since last year I’ve been *** key. My run ability and any running quarterback is always *** key, and I mean they’re going to chase me out of my fakes and run, and there’s always going to be an extra guy on me. I mean that’s normal. What he does best is run the football. If he can run the football, I like Oklahoma’s chances. I think the other thing is Oklahoma playing at home. You get an opportunity for the. It is huge. You can’t understate it at all. OU 8 and 3 all time in December football games. They got *** December football game and *** chance to go 9 and 3. Yeah, look, they had *** November to remember. I’ll say that. So let’s see what they can do in December to. Make their stamp and add to that stat like you just said they have success in December. Let’s see what they can do. Only lost to Ole Miss this season, 6-1 at home. We were here for that game. We did pregame shows for that game. It was, it was insane. But listen, hopefully today is *** totally different result than Ole Miss. This will be their 8th game against *** ranked team this season. It’s *** school record here at the University of Oklahoma. I do want to send it out down on Campus Corner. We’ve got *** big team out here. You saw Sky 5. Our own Jason Berger is out mingling amongst tailgaters out and about. Hey Jason. Brian, Hannah, I’m probably just *** couple blocks away from you guys. I’m at Jenkins and Page Street here in Norman, and I wanted to show you guys something. There is *** family back behind me here that has been tailgating at this exact location, OK, since 1995. They’ve used this spot for three decades now. I’ve also been told that they set up around noon. today, so they’ve been here for hours and they’re probably going to be mad at me for giving up their favorite intersection, but oh well, they are dedicated. We know it takes *** lot of dedication to be an OU fan, but that just gives you an idea of how dedicated they really are. Hours out here in the cold and we’re waiting on kickoff here in the next couple of minutes, guys. Thank you, Jason. We’ll get back to you, uh, here in just *** little bit, you know, from Memorial Stadium and, and everything. And I, I grew up going to football games here at Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. I went to *** bunch of OU Nebraska games back in the 80s and 90s, talking about two of the, the most powerful programs at that time, Oklahoma’s Remain. This is different though, playing ***. College football playoff game. There’s been so much talk about is this the biggest game of all time? Is it, is it the biggest game ever played at Oklahoma Memorial Stadium? We’ll let you decide. It’s *** monster football game no matter what, what, but this is unique. It’s different for *** stadium that just has seen almost everything in more than 100 years. Oklahoma Memorial Stadium has breathed in as much history as any stadium in America. It’s been the home for 50 conference championships and 82 All-Americans, and coaching royalty, second to none, where Bud and Barry and Bob collected national titles. It’s where Play Like *** Champion became iconic, where Leroy and Little Joe were legends, where the Boz became *** superstar. It’s where Samage ran for 427, and where seven statues watch over in Heisman Park. It’s where Baker and Kyler and Sam call home, where Jason White became the first OUQB to win the Heisman after Vessels and Sims and Owens ran their way to immortality. It’s where Keith Jackson went 88 in 85 to beat number 2 Nebraska on their way to one of the Sooner seven national championships. Where Andre Wolfel did this in 2000 and the goalposts were not safe. Look at this. Here comes *** Sooner stampede, and here they come again last season when the Sooners beat the Crimson Tide. Memorial Stadium has been *** house of pain where jump around means 65 to 21. It’s where Brennan Clay became *** Bedlam legend. And the Sooners beat the Aggies 77 to 0. It’s where Q ran wild and AD did too, and CD just needed one hand. It’s where Superman and Rocky starred on the big screen, where Teddy tackled and Elvis played to *** full house, and so did the Stones. It was home to the godfather of the Wishbone, and then the Wishbone Wizard, where Antonio Perkins scored not once, not 2, but 3 times on punt returns. And even the record that’s still *** record today came to an end at Memorial Stadium when Notre Dame beat Oklahoma in 1957 and ended the sooner streak of 47 wins in *** row. But Norman, Oklahoma has never played host to the college football playoff. The quarterback at Alabama even became the quarterback at Oklahoma before the playoff, but all of that changes tonight on one of the most hallowed grounds in college football, Peterson, where Tommy McDonald called home. And Pruitt and Dixon and Casillas and Broyles. Tonight, this is *** first, *** brand new history on Owen Field where the king says they invented winning and Bob Stoops shouted it from the mountaintop. The history of Oklahoma. Is about winning championships. Tonight on Owen Field at Memorial Stadium, it’s almost time for history to be written again. It’s almost time for the college football playoffs. You did such *** good job with that. I love that story. What’s your favorite memory inside Memorial Stadium? I was there when Keith Jackson, had the reverse for *** touchdown in ’85, and so Oklahoma beat number 2 Nebraska, went on to win the national championship. Hard to beat that one. Hard to beat that one. We can do that tonight. Counting you down to the college football playoff. Stay with us on the KOCO College Football Countdown. Welcome back to the KOCO College Football Countdown. It’s almost time for the playoffs, and it’s pretty windy out here. Do you think that might be *** factor tonight for *** kicker per se who’s really, really good, yeah, who’s really, really good? Tate Sandell. He is the number one kicker in the country, and earlier this week he talked about his journey to Oklahoma and how he has come up with all this success lately. Here he is. Everyone would tell me like in my old school, oh, you’re not like ***, *** normal kicker or whatever. I was like, well, you know, I’m just, I’m just *** football guy. I, I enjoy this stuff. Kate Sandell says nerves are part of the game, but so far he’s 23 for 24 on field goals. Attempts this season, setting *** school and single season SEC record. I’ll I’ll have guys come up to me and kind of just, just look at me and like just give me *** little head nod and then they know what the deal is, you know, I tell them, you know, it’s not *** thing until you make it *** thing. So you know there’s nothing going on in my head except just if I get an opportunity, great, you know, I know what I can do with my opportunity. If not, you know, somebody else is going to go make *** play. I think Coach V’s confidence in me this year. You know, he, he said it whenever I got here, you know, when we were, uh, in fall camp and I had like *** 61 yarder, you know, normally people would punt in there, but he threw me out there and said, I’m not going to put *** limit on you, we’re going to see what you can do. And that, I just kind of fed off of that. But his success did not happen overnight. Sandell walked on at UTSA first and played 3 seasons there. If you were to tell me I’d be here, you know, in 3 years, you know, I’d, I’d laugh at you. I mean, there was *** point where, Me and my dad had that conversation, and man, the, you know, the money is running out, like we’re gonna have to, you know, think about some things and, you know, I’m not gonna put my family in *** financial burden, so I was, you know, I was almost done and just, Uh, thinking back to that and to what I was able to do this year, it’s, uh, there’s nothing sweeter. Nothing sweeter. I love that story. It’s cool to hear how he journeyed to Oklahoma and was able to find *** way, and here we are. You can trust him if he’s close enough to kick in *** field goal. I’ll tell you that. He’s *** weapon for them. There’s no question about that. When they get in the red zone, they score, um, every time. 32 trips in the red zone, 32 times they’ve scored. They’ve scored 23 touchdowns, 9 field goals. Tate Sandell, *** big part of that, and so is this guy, our lucky star, star player to watch. Now the Lucky Star casino’s star player to watch. I, I think you have to go this direction. I think you’ve got to go John Mattie, our lucky star, casino star player to watch. I think if John Mattie plays well, I, and I think this moving forward now and if they get to play Indiana in the Rose Bowl, if he plays well, can that offense come along enough to give the defense enough help because that defense is good enough to win the national championship. Is the offense good enough to win football games in this playoff? This is *** time to come. This is *** time to see *** lot from John Matt, and you may say that’s *** lot of pressure to put on *** guy. It’s his time to arrive and it’s his time to start really running the ball more. What do you have to lose? It’s do or die. So I’m expecting everyone to have their eyes on John Matt and his run game tonight because it will really throw off this Alabama defense. I love his toughness. I love his moxie. It’s time. You wanted this stage. It’s why. Transferred from Washington State. Here you are with an opportunity to etch your name in Oklahoma football history, and we will find out at the top of the hour tonight. Stay with us on the KOCO College Football Countdown as we continue to get closer and closer to kickoff in the college football playoffs in Norman, Oklahoma in *** packed Memorial Stadium. Here we go for Oklahoma and Alabama next. High atop Memorial Stadium, *** live look from Sky 5 inside the energy, the countdown, the college football playoff. Here we go on the KOCO College Football Countdown and it’s defense for Oklahoma, it’s defense, which is why our Ford keys to the game is defense. Now, the Oklahoma Four defensive keys to the game. Got to force turnovers, Hannah. Can you force turnovers? They did it in the first game they played. Pick 6, Eli Bowen, there you go. Oklahoma, that defense, the defensive line will get after you. Forced turnovers, you probably win. You know what, we keep saying turnovers, turnovers, turn turnovers, but it does not get old because listen, the defense wins games for them week after week. And so, hey, if you can turn it over and you can score with your defense, you are in *** league of your own. Against this Alabama team tonight. So that’s what I want to see feast or famine. Let’s turn it over. 18 straight wins when Oklahoma wins the turnover battle. They forced 13 turnovers in their last 8 football games. It was big in Knoxville. It was big in Tuscaloosa, and it was big in games here against the Missouri Tigers and the LSU Tigers. Turnovers, it’s huge. For Oklahoma, as our 4 defensive keys to the game is, it’s all about defense because that is what they are. Hard to kill, turn it over. That’s how you win in the college football playoff. So many playmakers to get it done. And so I cannot wait to see who it is that gets that turnover tonight. One more break. The countdown is on. It’s close to the playoff. The picks are in on the KOCO College Football countdown. Hey, it’s really exciting tonight. You can see the band is getting ready and, uh, the stands are full and it is exciting here in Sooner Nation here in Norman. The game’s about to start. It’s gonna be exciting. I hope you’re at *** place where you can watch it because it’s gonna be an exciting one. Reporting from Sky 5, the only news helicopter bringing you these live shots, Hannah, Brian. I love it. I love Chase having Sky 5 up there. That’s awesome on the KOCO College Football Countdown, one of the biggest nights ever in the history of that stadium behind us. You gotta go back *** long time before the stakes were the way they are tonight. They are high. It’s as high as it gets. You’re in the final 12. You got *** chance at the college football playoff. You’re in the tournament. Can you win the 8th national championship in Oklahoma history? It’s Oklahoma. It’s Alabama. It’s time for the picks. Now, the Hyundai picks of the game. All right, Hannah Hoover, what do you think? Can Oklahoma do it again? Can their defense get after the Crimson Tide? Can that defensive line dominate like they’ve done so many times? Is it time for John Mattier to take the Leach, see the stage, grab it with two hands and never let go. Is this the night Tate Sandell has to do it again? Is another big night in store for the University of Oklahoma in *** stadium that’s seen so many. Look, this game is no different than any other game, and I’m gonna talk like, uh, coach speak, right? Coach Hoover. Listen to me. Go. No, but I do. I’m taking Oklahoma because I’m gonna go with the team that has already passed the test. They’ve already played Alabama. They’ve proven that they can do it. This defense is going to make it tough on Ty Simpson to really get much of an execution and the game going efficiently. So I’m gonna go with OU because of their defense. I don’t expect anything flashy. I don’t. Expect anything crazy from John Matier, but I do hope, my hope is that we see *** lot more from the run game with him. But listen, don’t expect like fireworks to be going off because of John Matier. No, no, no, no, no. I, I, I, I’m picking Oklahoma. I’m just, I’m, I’m leading with that. I’m picking Oklahoma. I think they’re built for this. I think when they put hard to kill on *** sweatshirt, I think that’s what they mean. I think they are built mentality-wise. They exude all of what their head coach is about, and I, and I. I think that’s the team that I like in this football game tonight. I think they’re the tougher team. I think they’re the better defensive team. I think they’ll make fewer mistakes, and I love their playing at home in December. It doesn’t get better than that. I’m picking Oklahoma to move on to play in the Rose Bowl against Indiana in one of the biggest games ever played in this stadium. I cannot wait. Can we go live inside Memorial Stadium now, guys? Counting you down to Oklahoma and Alabama. There they are. Here they come. The college football playoff is next for Hannah Hoover. I’m Brian Keating. Thanks to Chase Rutledge and Jason Berger. Have fun tonight. Enjoy it. It’s playoff time in Oklahoma.
