Programming note: Watch Matt Maiocco’s full “49ers Game Plan” interview with Kyle Shanahan on NBC Sports Bay Area at 9 p.m. PT on Friday.
The 49ers have a clear, though difficult, path to the NFC West title and the conference’s No. 1 seed in the NFL playoffs.
Thanks to the Seattle Seahawks’ thrilling OT win over the Los Angeles Rams on Thursday night, the 49ers can win the division and earn a first-round bye if they emerge victorious in their final three regular-season games.
Simply put: They control their own destiny.
While this latest development is a huge talking point for 49ers fans, it’s way too early for coach Kyle Shanahan to start addressing it with his players and coaches.
“No, it’s not something I address,” Shanahan told NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco on Friday’s episode of “49ers Game Plan.” “I think everyone knows it. There’s so much information out, with people’s phones and stuff and everyone talking about it. I’m sure they realized watching that game, too, that that was the case. But to address it with three games left, to me, is kind of … doesn’t make much sense.
“We control our own destiny right now but in order to continue that, we have to win on Monday, we’ve got to win the following Sunday and then I can talk about it going into [Week 18], if that’s the case versus Seattle, to where, ‘Hey, this game right here means this next week or this next week.’ But until then, to me, it’s irrelevant.”
The first order of business for the 10-4 49ers is to go into Indianapolis’ Lucas Oil Stadium and beat Philip Rivers and the 8-6 Colts on Monday night.
If San Francisco gets by the Colts, they have the surprising Chicago Bears coming to Levi’s Stadium for a “Sunday Night Football” showdown.
Should the 49ers win those two games, and the Seahawks win their Week 17 road game against the Carolina Panthers, it would set up a winner-take-all season finale between a 12-4 San Francisco team and a 13-3 Seattle squad.
The winner of that potential showdown would capture the NFC West crown and earn the top seed, while the loser would be one of the NFC’s three wild-card teams and be forced to play the following weekend.
Shanahan isn’t focused on the potential scenarios, but fans surely will be paying close attention to the outcomes of each game.
Locking up the No. 1 seed can be the difference between a trip to Super Bowl LX in Santa Clara or an early offseason.
