Caleb Williams has been in the headlines for all the wrong reasons following a bombshell report indicating he initially wanted to avoid being drafted by the Chicago Bears last year.
In the recent ESPN report, spotlighting an upcoming book by Seth Wickersham, Williams and his father had discussed the extreme measures how they could try to avoid the Bears, along with a few other big notes of interest.
One former NFL quarterback has taken issue with the report in regards to Williams, current WFAN morning host Boomer Esiason. The former Cincinnati Bengals, New York Jets, and Arizona Cardinals quarterback, who played 14 seasons in the league, has done very well for himself in his post-playing career in the media, and believes Williams should earn his keep.
“When you think about this, I think a lot of these kids and their parents nowadays and the level of entitlement is breathtaking,” Esiason said on Friday morning’s show on WFAN in New York City. “It’s no wonder why he failed initially, and it’s no wonder why the coach got fired. Now they (Bears) go out and get an offensive coach in Ben Johnson, and now it’s on his ass. It’s going to be on his ass to live up to these so-called lofty expectations that he has for himself and that his father has for his son. I understand that there could be a discussion that (Chicago) could be a place where quarterbacks go to die, but go fix it. Be the reason that the team is going to turn it around and be the player that you think you are.”
Esiason added that he believes Williams should just stay quiet and earn his keep and respect around the league, which to a point is understandable. But he and his father also weren’t wrong with their concerns about the Bears not being able to develop quarterbacks.
In the end, despite all the drama that came out with this report, Williams made the right decision to go to Chicago and be part of the franchise turnaround. And now, he’s not doing it all by himself as the organization has done everything necessary to give their second-year leader the coaching and talent around him to succeed.
