The Cincinnati Bengals have entered the developmental stage of the regular season that hits all non-playoff teams in December.

Joe Burrow and the Bengals will continue to attempt to win games, of course. But those at the controls have turned an eye to the future, too.

Developmental reps for the likes of first-round pick Shemar Stewart are a big deal over the next three weeks.

So, too, is the work the Bengals quietly do behind the scenes. A good example popped up late this week when the team hosted three players on tryouts, according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC2:

It’s not too difficult to see why the Bengals might be looking at those positions. At wideout, Jermaine Burton got cut and Charlie Jones just got hurt again.

At defensive back, the Bengals have a clear-cut long-term building block with DJ Turner. Everything else is up for grabs.

And the disaster at linebacker speaks for itself. The team shoved out Germaine Pratt and Logan Wilson for rookies Demetrius Knight and Barrett Carter and didn’t sign adequate depth on the chance that experiment blew up in their faces.

These three players last popped up in the CFL. This time of year, they’ll be ones to remember right after the season when the Bengals start signing players to futures contracts while assembling their offseason roster.
