The Los Angeles Rams have gotten an MVP-caliber season from veteran quarterback Matthew Stafford. The connection between Stafford and head coach Sean McVay was good enough to win one Super Bowl, and for most of the season, it seemed like the duo could pull off another.

However, the Rams suffered a brutal loss to the Seattle Seahawks that put an enormous dent in their Super Bowl aspirations. The loss knocked Los Angeles out of the NFC’s one seed, which would mean not only having to play in the Wild Card round, but having to do so on the road if they can’t surpass Seattle to win the NFC West.

After the embarassing defeat, that the Rams in all likelihood should have won, there is a major change coming to the coaching staff,” according to one prominent league insider.

“ESPN sources: Rams fired special teams coordinator Chase Blackburn. The Rams’ special teams played a role in three of the team’s four losses this season, including Thursday night’s defeat in Seattle, and now changes are being made,” ESPN’s senior NFL insider Adam Schefter reported on Saturday.

Schefter then gave more context to the firing.

“How rare is this? This represents the first in-season coaching change that Rams head coach Sean McVay ever has had.”

Fans reacted to the news on social media.

“When special teams directly swing close games, someone’s job is on the line. Rams are in win-now mode, and they can’t afford hidden-yardage mistakes if they’re serious about a Super Bowl run,” one fan wrote on Twitter.

“Wow. Rarely do you see a team 11-4 fire anybody. Not saying it is right or wrong, just surprised to do it this late in the season. Should have been done much earlier if special teams were an issue,” another fan added.

“11-4 team fired their coach but Stefanski thinks bubba needs more time,” someone else added.

It’ll be interesting to see if the Rams special teams unit cleans up its act moving forward.
