Texas A&M’s breakthrough-season under second-year coach Mike Elko has concluded in a two-game losing streak, and now the Aggies already have begun to come to grips with massive changes to their coaching staff.
With Collin Klein already announced as head coach at his alma mater, Kansas State, and Holmon Wiggins elevated as successor to Klein as Aggies offensive coordinator, the Texas A&M program is still absorbing major changes.
Jordan Peterson is departing for Kansas State, where he will become Klein’s inaugural defensive coordinator. Late Saturday night, sources told FootballScoop, the Aggies had attempted to keep Peterson in the A&M program. An A&M graduate, Peterson coached four years previously in Kansas — at the University of Kansas under both Les Miles and Lance Leipold before he transitioned to the Aggies staff.Â
But that’s not all the change coming to Elko’s Aggies staff.
Multiple sources tell FootballScoop that veteran defensive line coach Elijah Robinson is poised for a return to Texas A&M football, as FootballScoop first reported heading into the weekend.
Robinson coached seven-straight years in the state of Texas, spending one season at Baylor under Matt Rhule in 2017 and then reeling off six in a row under Jimbo Fisher’s Texas A&M regime. He departed for two years as a defensive coordinator in Fran Brown’s Syracuse Orange program before electing after the end of the 2025 regular season to re-enter the open market.
Robinson nearly landed at LSU, going so far as to fly down to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and spend time in the LSU facility with new Tigers head coach Lane Kiffin and his staff, but the two sides parted without a deal; LSU, indeed, moved on and is poised to formally hire away Sterling Lucas from South Carolina.
Per several sources, Robinson has been mulling offers from Texas A&M and Rhule’s Nebraska program in the past week; Aggies sources are confident that Robinson will ink a deal with the Texas A&M program as soon as Monday.
Elsewhere on Klein’s inaugural K-State staff, sources tell FootballScoop that veteran coach Nick Toth — with whom Peterson worked alongside at Texas A&M nearly 15 years ago — will join the Wildcats’ staff. Toth has had several notable coaching stops, including a strong run with Troy Calhoun’s Air Force Academy Falcons this decade.
Klein additionally is expected to add more SEC experience to his K-State staff. Sources shared with FootballScoop that Marcus Woodson, fired this fall from his role at Arkansas in a defensive pass-game coordinator/safeties role, is expected to join Klein’s staff as cornerbacks coach.  Â
Sources also tell FootballScoop that incumbent Aggies defensive line coach Sean Spencer is departing to rejoin James Franklin’s coaching staff, this time at Virginia Tech.
Spencer and Franklin previously worked together for several consecutive seasons at both Vanderbilt and then Penn State. Spencer then spent a couple seasons in the NFL with the New York Giants and also coached in the SEC at Florida before he joined the Aggies staff as defensive line coach prior to the 2024 season.
