A few days later, plenty of Seattle Seahawks fans are surely still basking in the euphoria of one of the wildest and most improbable victories in franchise history.

More than a few might also still be in a state of disbelief.

After trailing 30-14 with less than 9 minutes to play, the Seahawks stormed back and stunned the Los Angeles Rams for a 38-37 overtime win that vaulted them atop the NFC West and gave them the inside track to the NFC’s No. 1 seed.

The anatomy of a comeback: How Seahawks stunned the Rams

Just how crazy was Seattle’s epic comeback? Here’s a closer look.

A historic comeback

By overcoming a 16-point fourth-quarter deficit, this marked the Seahawks’ largest fourth-quarter comeback win in franchise history. Seattle had been 0-172 when trailing by 15-plus points in the fourth quarter, including both regular-season and postseason games.

In terms of overall deficits, this is tied with the Seahawks’ epic NFC championship game comeback against the Green Bay Packers in January 2015, when they erased a 16-0 third-quarter deficit en route to a 28-22 overtime triumph.

As for the largest comeback in franchise history? That came during the Seahawks’ 2013 Super Bowl season, when overcame a 21-0 second-quarter deficit to beat the lowly Tampa Bay Buccaneers 27-24 in overtime.

The statistical oddities

Aside from the deficit, what made this victory truly mind-boggling was that it came despite Seattle’s vaunted defense allowing a franchise-record 581 total yards. That included 457 yards through the air, which were the fourth-most passing yards allowed in Seahawks history. Ironically, Seattle is 4-0 all-time when allowing 450-plus passing yards.

And in addition to being outgained by 166 total yards, the Seahawks also lost the turnover battle 3-0.

Just how rare is it to win a game under those circumstances?

Since the Super Bowl era began in 1966, according to Stathead, NFL teams prior to Thursday night were 1-438 when getting outgained by 150-plus total yards and finishing minus-3 or worse in the turnover margin (including both regular-season games and postseason games). That lone team to pull off a win was the 2001 Oakland Raiders, who beat the Kansas City Chiefs 28-26 despite getting outgained by 183 yards and finishing minus-4 in the turnover margin.

Now, the 2001 Raiders have some company. After Thursday night, NFL teams are 2-438 under those circumstances.

As close as can be

Many experts consider the Seahawks and Rams to be the two best teams in the entire NFL this season.

They also have been incredibly evenly matched.

The NFC West rivals have split their two regular-season matchups this season, with the Rams winning 21-19 in L.A. last month before the Seahawks returned the favor with a one-point overtime win on Thursday night.

And when combining the points and total yardage from those two matchups, here’s what you get…

• Rams: 58 points and 830 total yards

• Seahawks: 57 points and 829 total yards

It’s hard to get any closer than that.

The one major difference in the two matchups has been turnovers, with the Rams holding a 7-1 advantage in turnover margin. But somehow, the Seahawks overcame that disparity to split the two matchups – and to come within a last-second 61-yard field goal of winning both matchups.

Now, the question is whether the Seahawks and Rams will collide again in the playoffs next month.

Given the way things are trending, these two juggernauts seemed destined for a winner-take-all Round 3.
