THE STORY: Michael Wilson had his hands on his head as he sat in the locker room following Sunday’s 26-19 loss to the Falcons at State Farm Stadium.

There was a brief smile when thinking about the highlight-reel touchdown where he pinned the loose football between his thighs to score. But when he thought about the interception that secured the Atlanta victory and another close loss for his team, the smile quickly faded.

“You never get numb,” Wilson said. “No matter how many games you’ve lost in a row, it’s unacceptable.”

“I don’t have anything to say. It’s just not unacceptable.”

The Cardinals again had an opportunity to turn a one-score game in their favor. With 2:05 left, the Cardinals, led by Darius Robinson and Dalvin Tomlinson, stuffed a fourth-and-1 Falcons run to give the ball back to the offense with an opportunity to tie the game.

But Jacoby Brissett’s pass in Wilson’s direction was intercepted by a diving C.J. Henderson. The quarterback, who finished the game 16-of-31 for 203 yards, took accountability, saying “I’ve got to give (Wilson) a better ball.” Wilson, who had 52 yards on two receptions, shouldered the blame.

Regardless, the Cardinals continue to fall in close outings. Coach Jonathan Gannon and his players pointed towards execution.

“It comes down to the details and the finish,” Brissett said. “I think we have good plays called.”

It’s the Cardinals’ eighth one-score loss of the season.

The first half of the game started well for the Cardinals. Brissett and the offense opened up the game with four straight scoring drives for the first time this season and held a double-digit lead early in the game. Wilson’s college teammate, tight end Elijah Higgins, finished with a career-high 91 receiving yards.

Kicker Chad Ryland nailed 51- and 50-yard field goals in the first half, but a pair of missed attempts later on proved costly.

“I’ve got all of the faith in the world in him,” Gannon said. “I’m sure he wants some back, just like everybody in there. I’ll keep putting him out there. I’ve got faith in him.”

Defensively, the Cardinals could not slow Falcons running back Bijan Robinson, who Gannon described as a “highlight reel” earlier in the week. The Arizona native proved why he’s one of the best players in the league, finishing the game with 168 total yards rushing and receiving. He also had a receiving touchdown.

Campbell, who potentially played his final home game, has been transparent about the team’s struggles throughout the campaign. Following Sunday’s outing, he doubled down.

“I’m just so surprised,” Campbell said. “I did not think we’d lose this many games.”

While many games have finished in similar fashion, Campbell acknowledged that the injuries have played a major role, and something that the 18-year veteran hasn’t experienced at this rate.

Both cornerback Garrett Williams and Walter Nolen III were carted off the field. Outside linebacker Josh Sweat also had an ankle injury that eventually took him out of the game.

“I told the guys in (the locker room) that they are all in there for a reason,” Gannon said. “We’re down. We aren’t defeated. They’re picked for a reason, and we think they can play and help us win, so that’s what we’ve got to do.”
