The New England Patriots boosted their odds of earning the AFC’s No. 1 seed with their Sunday Night Football win over the Baltimore Ravens, and they got some help in Week 16.
Before the Patriots’ 28-24 victory, the Jacksonville Jaguars took down the top-seed Denver Broncos on the road. As a result of both games, New England’s chances of getting a first-round bye are still very much alive. The Patriots and Broncos both will enter Week 17 with 12-4 records.
As for the battle for the AFC East, the Patriots still have the advantage over the Buffalo Bills despite last week’s crushing loss.
Here’s a full rundown of the Patriots’ No. 1 seed and AFC East scenarios after Sunday Night Football.
Current AFC standings
Here’s a look at the AFC standings and the remaining schedules of the teams still in the playoff hunt. Every team not on this list has been eliminated from postseason contention.
Denver Broncos (12-3, AFC West leader)
New England Patriots (12-3, AFC East leader)
Jacksonville Jaguars (11-4, AFC South leader)
Pittsburgh Steelers (9-6, AFC North leader)
Los Angeles Chargers (11-4, First wild card)
Buffalo Bills (11-4, Second wild card)
Houston Texans (10-5, Third wild card)
Indianapolis Colts (8-6)
Baltimore Ravens (7-8)
Race for seeding in the AFC
The Jacksonville Jaguars took down the No. 1 seed Denver Broncos on Sunday. Had the Patriots lost to the Ravens, the Jaguars would have overtaken them for the No. 2 seed.
Since the Pats won in Baltimore, their No. 1 seed odds have skyrocketed. They now simply need to win their last two games against the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins, and for Denver to lose one more game.
The Patriots and Broncos both are 12-4 heading into Week 17, but Denver owns the tiebreaker due to its better record against common opponents. (New England lost to the Raiders in Week 1, while the Broncos beat Las Vegas twice.)
Race for the AFC East
Earning the AFC’s top seed still won’t be an easy task for New England, but how about the division?
The Buffalo Bills (11-4), fresh off a wild comeback win over the Patriots, took down the Cleveland Browns on Sunday. That didn’t end up mattering as much with the Patriots’ win over the Ravens.
The Pats remain one game ahead of the Bills with two games left on the schedule, and New England currently owns the tiebreaker against Buffalo. If the Patriots and Bills finish the season with the same record, the tiebreakers are as follows:
Head-to-head record (Patriots 1, Bills 1)
Record in division games (Patriots: 3-1; Bills 3-2)
Record in games vs. common opponents (Patriots: 9-1; Bills 9-2)
The Patriots can clinch the division with a win over the Jets and a Bills loss to the Eagles in Week 17. New England also will win the division if it wins its final two games.
Current playoff matchups
If the season ended today, the No. 2 seed Patriots would meet the No. 7 Houston Texans in the Wild Card round. That would be a scary matchup for New England against arguably the best defense in the NFL.
