Liam Coen certainly feels like he got the last laugh.
Last week, Denver Broncos coach Sean Payton praised the Jacksonville Jaguars, but the way he did so didn’t sit well in Jacksonville.
“As you look at them and you watch the tape, it’s a smaller market, but you see a real good team,” Payton said last Wednesday.

The Jaguars went on to defeat the Broncos 34-20 on Sunday, and this was Coen’s opening postgame remark after the upset win: “Great team effort. [I’m] just thankful that a small market team like us can come into a place like Mile High and get it done.”
It’s unclear if Payton even meant his “small market” comment as a slight. In fact, it’s very possible that he meant it as a compliment, noting that Jacksonville doesn’t get the media attention it deserves despite being a “real good team.”
Coen said the Jaguars used it as a rallying cry leading up to the game, and the club’s social media team also trolled Denver after the win.
As for Payton, he said it was a “disappointing loss” in his postgame press conference.

“All the things that were important or are important to winning, we didn’t do a good enough job with and that starts with me,” Payton said. “They were better on third downs. They won the turnover battle, and they won the kicking battle. So now we have a short week to digest it. You can’t spit it out. You’ve got to swallow it. That starts with every one of us.”
The Broncos dropped to 12-3 with the loss, but Denver could still clinch the AFC West and the No. 1 seed in the conference with wins over the next two weeks.
