KANSAS CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – A familiar face is returning to the Kansas City Chiefs as the team deals with several injuries in the quarterback room.
With star quarterback Patrick Mahomes out with a torn ACL and backup quarterback Gardner Minshew suffering a knee injury of his own during Sunday’s 26-9 loss to the Tennessee Titans, Kansas City has signed Shane Buechele off the Buffalo Bills practice squad.
Buechele joins the Chiefs after having spent time with the organization during the 2021-23 seasons. Buechele was most recently cut by the Chiefs after the 2023 preseason.

The former Texas and SMU quarterback is joining the active roster, the team announced Monday. Minshew was placed on season-ending injured reserve.
Third-string quarterback Chris Oladokun replaced Minshew on Sunday and played the remaining three quarters, completing 11 of 16 passes for 111 yards.
On Monday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter said Minshew’s ACL was intact, after reports yesterday that Kansas City feared Minshew may have also torn his ACL a week after Mahomes did.
