Kansas State LB Austin Romaine intends to enter his name into the NCAA Transfer Portal. That has since been confirmed this morning by On3’s Pete Nakos, after initial reporting by those at CBS Sports on Monday.

Romaine has spent the past three seasons at K-State, having, for the duration of his collegiate career, been in Manhattan. He has gone on to make 34 appearances, 20-plus of those being starts, on the defense for the Wildcats.

With this, Romaine will move on after having posted 184 total tackles, 17.5 of them being for loss with 3.5 sacks, along with four deflections, three forced fumbles with one fumble recovery, and an interception. That includes a career-best season last fall as a sophomore where he had 96 total tackles, 7.5 being for loss with 2.0 sacks, with all three of his forced fumbles and two deflections, which earned him nods as 2024 All-Big 12 Second Team by the Coaches and the Associated Press. He then didn’t fully live up to the preseason hype he had coming into this season, making the watchlists for the Nagurski, Bednarik, and Butkus Awards, as Romaine, who also missed the final three games of the year with a hand injury, had 66 total tackles, 7.0 for loss with half a sack, with two deflection, his fumble recovery, and pick.

A native of Hillsboro, Missouri, Romaine was a Top-1,500 overall recruit as a three-star in the 2023 recruiting cycle. He also rated as a Top-150 LB in the class and as a Top-30 player out of the state of Missouri. That’s according to Rivals’ Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies.

This comes as the latest news of the transfer cycle this offseason for Kansas State. That’s following the announcement of the retirement of Chris Klieman, and their coaching change since with the hire of Collin Klein. More roster turnover could or should be further expected, due to that, for the Wildcats.

Romaine was productive in his career at K-State, in being one of the top defenders for the Wildcats. He, after the coaching change, though, will now be set to spend his final year of eligibility elsewhere, with his plan being to enter the portal once the window officially opens on January 2nd.
