PRACTICE SQUAD QB SIGNED TO CHIEFS ROSTER

Bills QB Shane Buechele was signed off the team’s practice squad and onto the Kansas City Chiefs’ active roster Monday afternoon. With Patrick Mahomes out with an ACL injury and backup Gardner Minshew injuring his knee on Sunday against Tennessee, Kansas City was in need of another QB for Week 17.

NFL teams are permitted to sign unprotected players off another team’s practice squad under the condition that they are signed directly to the active roster. Teams are allowed to protect a maximum of 4 players on their practice squad from being signed elsewhere.

In this case, Buechele will now join the Chiefs’ 53-man roster and could suit up as soon as Christmas Day when Kansas City hosts the Denver Broncos.

Buechele has been with the Bills since the start of the 2023 season, but was with the Chiefs (2021-22) for two seasons prior. Buechele has not attempted a regular pass in the NFL, but could be in line to do so with the Chiefs.

“More than anything, I’m happy for Shane. He and his family, they’ve been with us and done a phenomenal job. I have a ton of respect and love and admiration for Shane,” McDermott shared.

McDermott added that “we’ll look into” whether or not Buffalo wants to add another QB back to its practice squad this week.
