The Washington Commanders held their first practice of a shortened week as they prepare to host the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday, Christmas day. The team made a pair of roster moves to deal with injuries earlier today. Marcus Mariota had stitches in his hand, and is also dealing with a quad injury from Saturday’s game against the Eagles. The Commanders claimed Jeff Driskel off the Arizona Cardinals practice squad, bringing him back to the team he was QB3 for last season. Mariota is day-to-day and has swelling in his hand so Josh Johnson will get the majority of the snaps in practice, but Dan Quinn didn’t give an updated depth chart.
Sam Cosmi was placed on injured reserve after suffering a concussion vs the Eagles on Saturday. He missed the first six games of the season while rehabbing a torn ACL from the playoffs in January. He will be replaced at RG by Andrew Wylie who was playing the position for four games before Cosmi returned.
Washington had a few other injuries from Saturday that could affect this week, and the season finale. Jaylin Lane returned his second punt for a touchdown last week against the Giants, but left Saturday’s game with an ankle injury. Dan Quinn said it was unlikely he’d be able to play this week. LB Nick Bellore is one of Coach Izzo’s core special teamers, but he didn’t practice today due to a concussion.
Brandon Coleman was filling in for Laremy Tunsil who missed his first game due to an oblique injury. Coleman left the Eagles game with a shin injury, but was a full participant today. Tunsil is still not practicing, and could be a candidate to shutdown for the rest of the season. Coleman will continue to get the start at LT while he’s healthy, and with Wylie now taking over RG, expect Trent Scott to be active again this week.
TE Colson Yankoff also missed last week as he dealt with an ankle injury. Washington elevated Lawrence Cager from the practice squad for the first time this season, and he played one snap on offense. Yankoff was back to a full participant today, and should be rejoining John Bates and Ben Sinnott in the TE room.
Washington’s defensive line depth has been getting tested with Eddie Goldman out with a concussion. He missed the Eagles game, and didn’t practice again today. Daron Payne was also on today’s injury report with a back injury that he has been listed with before this season. The DL got a new player last week with DE Drake Jackson making his first appearance on a football field since suffering a patellar tendon injury while with the 49ers in 2023.
