The Washington Commanders may have hit rock bottom at this point in 2025. They didn’t just lose to the Philadelphia Eagles on Saturday; they also found themselves in a quarterback pickle.
After shutting down Jayden Daniels, Marcus Mariota was set to finish the season as the Commanders‘ starting quarterback. But on Saturday, Mariota left the game with a concussion and hand injury and did not return, leaving Josh Johnson to lead the offense. Mariota remains questionable for Week 17, leading the Commanders to sign Jeff Driskel to the roster.
As we enter Week 17, here’s a look at where the Commanders stand in a multitude of power rankings.

QB Jeff Driskel could be under the Christmas tree for Thursday’s game against Dallas. Been that kind of season in Old D.C.
The idea of having well traveled 39-year-old Josh Johnson in your quarterback room is great, until he has to play. Johnson produced almost nothing when he had to play Saturday after Marcus Mariota exited due to injury. And we all might get to watch Johnson start against Dallas on Christmas Day if Mariota’s hand and quad injuries don’t heal in time. It doesn’t matter much. The Commanders are having a horrendous season and should be happy when it’s over.

What exactlyhh is it that head coach Dan Quinn does for this team? It can’t be building a good defense, because his units tend to get worse each year – something that we’ve seen going back to his sting with teh Cowboys. It can’t be player personnel or development, because GM Adam Peters it eh architect of this roster, and Washingtont’s defensive players don’t seem to be getting markedly better in Quinn’s system. And we know that the offense belongs to coordinator Kliff Kingsbury, who may find a new head coaching gig this offseason.
If the mere absence of quarterback Jayden Daniels can cause this team to crater, then it’s probably time to bring in a new coaching regime.
The Commanders just haven’t fielded enough reliable defense all season long, with their age and youth showing in all the wrong places. They will just hope everything will change again with a healthy Jayden Daniels leading the offense.

It’s hard to believe this was a team playing in the NFC Championship Game last year. The current team isn’t very good.
Dan Quinn adorably lingered on the field at the end of Eagles-Commanders to make sure there weren’t going to be any more fights like the world’s best little league dad.
One concern: Jayden Daniels’ health
Washington will be without its quarterback for the rest of the season after shutting him down after an injury-filled campaign. Without him, there’s not a lot of excitement surrounding this team beyond the changes that will come to the roster this offseason.

Another loss in a lost season. The Commanders could be a sneaky team to watch next year if they can remain healthy. It will be a true test for Dan Quinn in Washington.
Congrats to Dan Quinn, who showed no fight at the end of the Eagles game. I don’t understand why he refused to go for it on fourth down, or why he constantly ran the ball. To quote my dad, “He’s a total loser.”

Rookie of the year: Right tackle Josh Conerly Jr.
Running back Jacory Croskey-Merritt has thrived with 671 rushing yards and six touchdowns, but Conerly is the lone Commander to play every snap from scrimmage this season. He struggled early this season while facing pass rushers such as Brian Burns, Micah Parsons and Maxx Crosby in his first three games. But he settled in and has steadily improved, saying he’s more confident. “Had some tough moments [early],” offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury said, “but … I’ve been really impressed by the work ethic and just the mental toughness he’s displayed.
