As outlined by Mike Tomlin during his Tuesday press conference, the Steelers have a long list of injuries that are typical for late in the season. However, injured players are moving in the right direction. Watt returned for his first practice since undergoing surgery for a partially collapsed lung. Reporters noted that Watt mostly focused on conditioning work instead of drills but it’s still a positive sign. Herbig remains limited after ending last week that way.
Against Detroit, Alex Highsmith and rookie Jack Sawyer started with Jeremiah Moon serving as the No. 3, playing 15 snaps.
Pierre has missed the past two games with a calf injury. Tomlin noted that Pierre had begun working his way back but would be limited early in the week, reflective of his status today. Asante Samuel Jr. has started in his place.
Warren’s injury is considered minor and Tomlin said he expects Warren to play against Cleveland. Tomlin also mentioned OL Spencer Anderson as someone who could be limited early in the week, but he wasn’t even listed on today’s report. If the Steelers have clinched the division by Sunday, it will be interesting to see if either are limited in any capacity in order to be healthy for the playoffs. Anderson started in place of Seumalo, who missed Week 16 due to a triceps injury.
Echols and Austin were injured during the Lions game. Their statuses are unclear against the Browns. Cornerback depth is thin and could require Jalen Ramsey to slide down from safety to slot corner as he did versus Detroit. With DK Metcalf suspended, losing Austin would put Pittsburgh down two receivers. Roman Wilson would dress and have an opportunity while Adam Thielen, Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Ben Skowronek, and Scotty Miller could see increased reps and chances.
Kuntz injured his knee during practice last week but did not miss the Lions game. He seems healthy for this weekend, too. This is the first time Fautanu is on the report but it’s not injury related and he will play in Week 17.
Pittsburgh and Cleveland kick off Sunday at 1 PM/EST.
