The awards keep on coming for the Houston Texans this holiday season.

All-Pro and recently-named two-time Pro Bowl cornerback Derek Stngley Jr. was named Week 16’s AFC Defensive Player of the Week, the NFL announced Wednesday. With a win on Sunday, Houston would clinch a third postseason bid under DeMeco Ryans and Stingley since his arrival in 2022.

In Sunday’s 23-21 win over the Las Vegas Raiders, Stingley notched two tackles, one forced fumble and returned an interception 31 yards for a touchdown during the first quarter to give Houston a 7-0 lead. It marked the Texans defender’s first career interception return for a touchdown this season and the first of Stingley’s NFL career.

According to NFL research, Stingley was the only player in the AFC to return an interception for a touchdown last week.

“I had to ask him actually in the game. I asked him, ‘Is that your first pick six?’ He’s like, ‘Yeah, first one since high school.’ It’s impressive,” Ryans said postgame. “I was shocked because a guy with such great hands as Stingley has and how he intercepts the football, he’s such a talented guy. I was shocked that he hadn’t had one since high school. But we needed it on Sunday and I’m happy he got it then.”

In addition to becoming just the third player in the NFL this season to record a forced fumble and an interception return for a touchdown in the same game, Stingley became the first player in franchise history to accomplish the feat. The interception marked his fourth of the season, making him the only player in the NFL with at least four interceptions in each of the last three seasons.

“He can do anything he wants to do,” defensive back Jalen Pitre said of his 2022 teammate draftee. “He’s the best cornerback in the league.

“I know y’all haven’t seen him at practice, but he also could play quarterback. There’s nothing he can’t do.”

In 15 games, Stingley has collected 32 tackles, 13 pass breakups, four interceptions and a forced fumble on the outside of the NFL’s league-leading defense in total yards allowed per game (272.3) and points per game allowed (16.6). The accolade marks Stingley’s third AFC Defensive Player of the Week honor of his career, all of which have come in December.

Stingley is now the third Texans player to earn AFC Player of the Week honors this season, joining All-Pro defensive end Danielle Hunter (Week 10) and quarterback C.J. Stroud (Week 5).

The Texans play the Los Angeles Chargers this Saturday at 3:30 p.m. The game will be televised on NFL Network.
