The New York Jets are climbing up the draft order after losing to the New Orleans Saints, 29-6, in Week 16. The loss drops the Jets to 3-12 and they now hold the fourth pick in April’s NFL Draft.

The Jets struggled moving the ball on offense all afternoon. The defense played with some fight in the first half under new defensive coordinator, Chris Harris. But, the second half was a complete disaster and the defense made Saints rookie QB Tyler Shough look like Drew Brees.

Here is Jets Wire’s report card following the Jets’ loss to the Saints:

Passing Offense: C-

This game is more on Tanner Engstrand than it is on Brady Cook. Engstrand did what most offensive coordinators do when they are starting a rookie quarterback. He held him back and protected him from making mistakes. Every pass was short as Cook only averaged only 5.4 yards a throw. He finished with 188 yards, no touchdowns and one interception.

This strategy is not doing Cook any favors and the team is hurting his potential development. Quite frankly, if you have zero intention of letting Cook sling it, then stop wasting our time and put Tyrod Taylor back as the starter to try to win the final two games of the season.

Rushing Offense: D

Brady Cook is very limited in what he can do as a quarterback, so the Jets are still trying to rely on their primary strength, which is their running game. But, it was another forgettable game for Breece Hall (54 yards on 16 carries) and it’s fair to wonder if he even wants to be in New York. He’s done very little to take the pressure off his inexperienced quarterback and his “woe is me” act is getting very stale. For a player looking to be paid like a top running back, Hall’s not really showing he’s deserving of a big contract. The Jets may be better off shutting him down for the season and giving Isaiah Davis the bulk of the carries over the final two games.

Rushing Defense: C-

The defensive line held their own against the Saints, who were without Alvin Kamara. Taysom Hill was the Saints leading rusher with 42 yards and New Orleans mostly did their damage through the air. On the bright side, Jowon Briggs continues to be a steal of a pickup for the Jets, recording another sack and now has four on the season.

Passing Defense: F

The change in defensive coordinators worked for about a half and then the wheels came off due to nothing happening on offense. Chris Olave torched the secondary to the tune of 148 yards on 10 catches and two touchdowns. Rookie QB Tyler Shough threw for over 300 yards. Jamien Sherwood probably had his best game of the season, making some key stops and had one of the three Jets sacks on the afternoon.

Special Teams: B

Nick Folk made two field goals, Austin McNamara had three punts inside the 20 and the return game did very little. Not much more to report here and it’s more and more depressing that this unit is the only one that comes to play each week.

Coaching: D

It’s understandable why reports started surfacing that Aaron Glenn may not be as safe as originally assumed. The team has played with zero passion since losing Tyrod Taylor to injury against Miami and are back to their “I Quit” mentality. The veterans have checked out and are ready to go on vacation. Fans and writers have every right to be skeptical of Glenn as the man to turn it around. For the third week in a row, the Jets lost by 20 or more points. Glenn is not getting fired after this season, but the mountain to climb to respectability and to earn the trust of this fan base just got much tougher.

Outside of special teams, The Jets have shown little to no improvement on offense or defense. The offense is back to being boring and the defense can’t stop anyone. Perhaps if Taylor didn’t get hurt against the Dolphins, the offense would be better and the team as a whole would have a pulse. But, the players refused to rise up to the challenge and fight. It’s much easier for Breece Hall, Jermaine Johnson and Quincy Williams to loaf the rest of the way and then badmouth the organization on their way out.

Everyone wants to tank the season until they watch what tanking looks like. If you’re a fan of losing and want the high draft pick, then you have no business complaining about Sunday’s performance. The Jets now have the fourth pick in April’s draft and could be one step closer to landing Indiana Quarterback Fernando Mendoza. They will most likely not win their final two games against the Patriots and Bills. I would say they should play for pride, but any type of pride left this group a long time ago.
