The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have slipped right onto their faces over the last six weeks, and it’s make-or-break time. If the Bucs win out, they’ll win the NFC South for the fifth consecutive season; if not, despair and gloom will officially commence.
Before the Buccaneers can create an all-important must win matchup in Week 18, they must creep past the sneaky Dolphins this Sunday. Despite just recently being eliminated from postseason contention, Tampa Bay could not be playing in Miami at a more perfect time.
The Dolphins finally benched longtime starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa after he threw a league-leading 15 interceptions through 14 games. The 27-year-old has battled through his fair share of controversy throughout his career, but is a shell of his 2023 self.
Baker Mayfield and the Bucs have a perfectly timed get right game against the Dolphins
In his place on Sunday stands 2025 7th round quarterback Quinn Ewers. During his lone start this season, Ewers completed 20 of 30 passes for 260 yards and two interceptions. While his stat line isn’t egregious, he’s a perfect match for the Buccaneers’ defense.
Young, inexperienced quarterbacks are highly susceptible to turnovers, something the Buccaneers are fantastic at creating. Every once in awhile, a QB will slip through the cracks and be different, but Ewers is no unicorn.
Through 71 snaps over two games in the NFL, Ewers has thrown two interceptions and fumbled twice. Dating back to his college days last season, he was always turnover-prone. He led the SEC with 12 interceptions over 14 games in 2024, despite leading the same conference in touchdowns.
On top of the aggressively high interception total, he fumbled seven times, which was fourth-highest in all of college football. His turnover-happy playstyle sank his draft stock tremendously and almost caused him to go undrafted.
The Buccaneers, on the other hand, love to wreak havoc with turnovers. Tampa Bay is eighth in takeaways per game and has one of the best turnover margins in the league.
In Week 16 against the Panthers, the Buccaneers failed to force a turnover, but things will change this week.
On top of Ewers’ high turnover rate, the rest of the Dolphins aren’t much better. Miami is 25th in turnover margin per game, and especially pitiful at home.
The Buccaneers have a much needed opportunity in this get-right game to bounce back and prepare for a Week 18 shootout against the Panthers. The last six weeks have been horrendous, but all could be well in Tampa if the Bucs bounce back against a dreadful 7th-round quarterback.
