It was uncharacteristic of the Seattle Seahawks defense to allow the Los Angeles Rams to score 37 points last week. Fortunately for them, the offense mounted an excellent comeback and won the game in overtime (with some underrated assists from the defense). Mike Macdonald will demand a better defensive performance versus the Carolina Panthers on Sunday.
We’ve identified three potential X-factors for the Seahawks‘ defense in Week 17.
DeMarcus Lawrence, EDGE
Derick Hall had his one-game suspension upheld, meaning he’ll miss Sunday’s contest. The Seahawks will need heavier pass-rushing production from the likes of DeMarcus Lawrence and Boye Mafe as a result. Making Panthers QB Bryce Young uncomfortable in the pocket is crucial.
Byron Murphy II, DT
Seahawks sophomore defensive tackle Byron Murphy II was disappointed to be snubbed from the 2026 Pro Bowl Games. The former Texas Longhorns standout has been consistently disruptive as a pass rusher this season. Murphy will look to collapse the pocket against a shaky Panthers offensive line.
Drake Thomas, LB
Veteran linebacker Drake Thomas led the Seahawks defense in tackles with 13 versus the Rams. The Panthers love establishing the run with their very underrated running back, Rico Dowdle. Thomas will need to continue playing an aggressive and downhill brand of physical football.
