The return of defensive coordinator Robert Saleh has been a great reunion for both parties, but how long will the 49ers retain him? General manager John Lynch went on KNBR Friday to discuss Saleh’s future with the franchise.

“There’s a human nature to this whole deal,” Lynch said. “Robert has big aspirations; he always has.”

Saleh was such a vital asset in his first stint for the 49ers that multiple teams had head coaching interest. He was ultimately hired by the New York Jets in 2021, only to be fired three years later.

“I don’t wanna speak for Robert, but I think he’ll probably be more ‘choosy’ this time,” Lynch continued. “He’s not gonna just go coach anywhere.”

The Jets’ coaching job is a difficult situation to step into, no matter who you are, so there’s likely some truth behind Lynch’s words. Having a familiar face at defensive coordinator has been a treat for everyone, especially a face who has had so much proven success.

“He probably wants a really good situation because he has one here,” Lynch elaborated. “We’re blessed to have Robert, but at some point you’ve got to understand that you have to allow people to go chase their dreams.”

Being the head coach of one of the NFL’s 32 franchises is any coordinator’s dream. Now that Saleh is back in head coaching conversations for a second time, he’ll possibly ponder a bit more before leaving the 49ers.

“Now we can make it very attractive for him to stay,” Lynch said. “We plan on doing that, but we’re fortunate to have Robert.”

The 49ers’ defense has been in the middle of the pack statistically, but most of that is due to injuries on that side of the ball. Culture translates to winning, and Saleh’s energy has brought a much-needed spark back to the organization.

“He does a tremendous job,” Lynch concluded. “We’re just gonna enjoy the ride right now, and then we’ll take care of that when it presents itself.”

Saleh’s decision could depend on how far the 49ers go in the postseason, and the next two regular-season games will determine whether or not the teams gets a first-round bye.
