Mack Hollins has become a vital part of the New England Patriots’ offensive attack.

Working with fellow former UNC football star Drake Maye, Hollins has carved out a significant role in the passing game. A full-time starter, Hollins ranks third on the team in receptions (46) and receiving yards (550).

Unfortunately, Hollins’ season might have come to an end, as he surprisingly has been placed on injured reserve.

BREAKING: The #Patriots are placing WR Mack Hollins on injured reserve due to an abdomen injury.

As a result, they have signed DT Jeremiah Pharms Jr. to the 53-man roster.

Coming off a seven catch, 69-yard performance against the Baltimore Ravens, a game in which the Patriots secured a playoff berth, Hollins apparently hurt his abdomen during the game. The former Tar Heel did not practice all week and was ruled out for Sunday’s contest against the New York Jets, but no one thought that the injury would keep him out long-term.

Well, Saturday’s announcement of Hollins being placed on injured reserve, at minimum, ends his regular season.

How long will Hollins be out?

Being placed on injured reserve, Hollins will now miss a minimum of four games. With only two regular-season games remaining, it’s possible that the 32-year-old has played his last snaps this season, barring a deep run into the AFC playoffs.

Of course, it’s possible that the Patriots could make a run to the AFC championship game, the likely return date if Hollins is healthy enough to rejoin the team, but it’s not a guarantee to happen.

A brutal blow to New England’s offense

While speaking to the media, head coach Mike Vrabel discussed how much Hollins will be missed while he’s sidelined.

“He has an energy to him,” Vrabel said. “And seeing him on Sunday night with the passion he had to help us win; we’ll obviously miss him. I’ve always appreciated his willingness to learn what we’re doing but also be a leader for some of the younger guys.”

While the news is unfortunate, the hope is that Hollins will have time to return this season, which would mean the Drake Maye-led Patriots made a deep run in the postseason.
