The Patriots responded to 35-31 loss to the Buffalo Bills in Week 15 with an impressive road win in Week 16, knocking off the Baltimore Ravens 28-24 as 4-point underdogs as the Over (48) cashed. QB Drake Maye threw for 380 yards and 2 TDs, despite a fumble and interception. WR Stefon Diggs had 9 catches for 138 yards. New England has now won 11 of its last 12 games.
The Jets slid to a third straight loss in Week 16, falling 29-6 to the New Orleans Saints. New York failed to cover as 7-point road underdogs, and the under (40) cashed. The Patriots (-900) are hoping to clinch the division in Week 17, but I’m not interested in these odds obviously. I’ll take my wager to the spread.
BET PATRIOTS -13.5 (-110).
I don’t usually like laying big numbers in division games, but this one feels different. The Patriots are playing for something real — an AFC East title — and they’ve shown all season they know how to handle business. New England is balanced, efficient and well-coached, ranking top 10 on both sides of the ball, and the floor is simply high every week.
The Jets, meanwhile, are going the opposite direction. They’ve lost 3 straight games by at least 23 points, and the offense looks completely stuck. Cook hasn’t provided much spark under center, and New York has been overwhelmed even by average competition. Over the past 3 weeks, the Jets have allowed 37.0 points per game and haven’t shown the ability to respond once things start going sideways.
Maye is playing confidently, and this defense tackles well and forces opponents to earn everything. That combination travels, and the Patriots have already proven they’re comfortable away from home. I expect a fast start, clean possessions and constant pressure on a Jets team that hasn’t handled adversity well.
I get the hesitation with a big spread, but the quarterback gap is massive and motivation isn’t an issue. New England has too much on the line to let this linger. I’m laying the points and trusting the better team to separate.
BET UNDER 43 (-110).
These division games tend to bog down, and 7 of the last 10 meetings have stayed below the total, including the earlier matchup this season. The Jets offense is broken right now, averaging just 12 points over the last 3 games with little ability to sustain drives. New England brings a top-10 scoring defense that tackles well and stays disciplined. This sets up as a grind-it-out game that struggles to reach the number.
