The New York Jets (3-12) first season under head coach Aaron Glenn mercifully comes to an end in two weeks.

Whether it’s Glenn’s only season with the team remains to be seen, but the final two games need to be played and the Jets will host the New England Patriots (12-3) in Week 17 at MetLife Stadium.

Brady Cook will remain the starter while Tyrod Taylor will be the backup. The Jets placed Justin Fields on IR, ending his season and most likely his time with the team. Mason Taylor, Will McDonald and Kiko Mauigoa will also not play on Sunday as the Jets embrace the tank and look to improve their spot in April’s NFL Draft.

The Patriots clinched a playoff spot with a victory last week over the Baltimore Ravens. They will clinch the AFC East with a victory over the Jets on Sunday.

Here are Jets Wire’s 3 keys to victory for the Jets vs. the Patriots:

Split the Carries

It’s unknown what future Breece Hall has with the Jets, but one thing’s for sure is that he’s not playing like a running back who’s deserving of a lucrative contract this offseason. The Jets will most likely put the franchise tag on him and either work out a new contract or trade him before the draft. Hall hasn’t rushed for 100 yards since October 26th and has only rushed for more than 75 yards once in his last seven games.

Hall is most likely checked out at this point, but he’s also only 56 yards away from his first career 1,000 yard season. He’s been a frustrating player to watch and it would be nice to see what Isaiah Davis can do with a good portion of the carries. Try and get Hall the yardage so he can break 1,000 and then sit him for the season. If Breece isn’t part of the future, then it’s time to give Davis an extended look the rest of the way.

Open Up The Playbook

Nothing is more frustrating than a coaching staff telling you they believe in a young player, but then hold that player back from truly running the offense, taking risks and learning on the job. That’s exactly how it was last week for Brady Cook against the Saints. Tanner Engstrand refused to take risks with his rookie quarterback, keeping all of his passes short and playing a very conservative style of offense. The result was predictable as the Jets were terrible moving the football and Cook not showing much in his development.

If the coaching staff is going to keep this strategy, then it’s proof they have little to no confidence in Cook. It also represents a domino effect as if the players see the coaches have no desire to be aggressive and try to win, they will quit and put out a terrible effort. There is no chance the Jets win on Sunday over New England. But, it would be nice if Engstrand trusted his quarterback more and made the offense entertaining to watch instead of the usual bore the fans are treated to every week.

Losses this late in the season can become hidden victories if the odds are in the Jets favor. New York currently holds the fourth pick in April’s NFL Draft. The Giants, Raiders and Browns are ahead of them. Fernando Mendoza is expected to be the top quarterback prospect in this draft and is expected to go in the first five picks. Only the Raiders are likely to take Mendoza as the Giants are set with Jaxon Dart and the Browns look like they’re moving forward with Shedeur Sanders for next season.

A Raiders win coupled with a Jets loss will make things very interesting heading into Week 18. The Jets will head to Buffalo to close out their season against the Bills while the Raiders host the Chiefs, who are down to their third-string quarterback after season-ending injuries to Patrick Mahomes and backup Gardner Minshew. Rarely does a game between two bad teams have so much significance if you’re a fan that’s in favor of tanking. The Giants and Jets share an ugly stadium together. Perhaps, Big Blue can help their co-tenant with a loss to Vegas on Sunday.
