The Pittsburgh Steelers’ long-term commitment to DK Metcalf was at a crossroads this week as his two-game suspension for an altercation with a fan in the stands against the Detroit Lions put his guarantees at risk. According to Jay Glazer, the Steelers opted against going down that route.
“Because he got suspended, the Steelers could have basically taken back all of his guarantees. They however decided not to do that,” Glazer said Sunday via FOX NFL Kickoff. “They’ll stick with DK. They don’t want to do something like that. They want to kinda make a long-term commitment to DK Metcalf.”

This is in line with what NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported last week that the Steelers “reaffirmed” their long-term commitment to Metcalf.
They traded a second-round pick to the Seattle Seahawks to acquire him last offseason and then turned gave him one of the most lucrative WR contracts in the NFL. They committed to him through the 2029 season at an average of just under $33 million per season.
The Steelers could have taken this opportunity to hold leverage against Metcalf throughout the next couple years of his contract, but Glazer is reporting they opted not to do that.
Mike Tomlin stated that he does not condone Metcalf’s actions, but he supports him nevertheless. When asked why he supports him, Tomlin spoke about his character on and off the field.
“He’s been great. He cares, he works hard, he’s a heck of a guy. He’s a good teammate, and that’s why he’s easy to support,” Tomlin said last week via the Steelers’ YouTube.
Pittsburgh has never been an organization to make rash decisions, especially when making long-term commitments to players or coaches. Metcalf will be no exception here despite his unfortunate actions and suspension.
Metcalf is out for the rest of the regular season, which matters more now that the Baltimore Ravens won on Saturday. Pittsburgh needs to win or tie one of its next two games to clinch the AFC North. That is made obviously more difficult without its top receiving weapon.
