The San Francisco 49ers hosted the Chicago Bears at Levi’s Stadium on Sunday night, and they walked away with a 42-38 victory in the primetime showdown.
San Francisco’s offense was strong, as they scored six touchdowns, but they also gave Chicago a touchdown by throwing a pick-six on the first pass of the game. It was Robert Saleh’s defense that kept the Bears around longer than they should’ve been.

As we do after every game, let’s take a look at some of the best and worst performances from the 49ers on Sunday night and hand out some credit and criticism.
BEST: RB Christian McCaffrey
McCaffrey rushed for a season-high 140 yards and a touchdown on an impressive 6.1 yards per attempt while catching another four passes for 41 yards. He also became the second player (joining LaDainian Tomlinson) to have three seasons of 2,000+ scrimmage yards and 15+ touchdowns.
WORST: Secondary
Bears quarterback Caleb Williams wasn’t very accurate, as he completed just 59.5% of his passes, but San Francisco didn’t do much to slow him and Ben Johnson’s passing attack down. Williams finished the game with 330 yards and two touchdowns, with Luther Burden III accounting for 138 yards and one score. Renardo Green didn’t play, and Upton Stout left with a concussion.

BEST: QB Brock Purdy
Purdy started with the worst play you can make, as his opening pass of the game was returned by Bears linebacker T.J. Edwards for a touchdown. However, he locked in after that, and finished the game with a 72.7% completion percentage for 303 yards, three touchdowns and that one interception. He also carried the ball six times for 28 yards and two touchdowns.
WORST: Front seven
Stop me if you’ve heard this before, but the 49ers didn’t record a sack. They also allowed the duo of D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangai to rush for 92 yards and two touchdowns on 5.4 yards per attempt. If San Francisco’s offense wasn’t putting up points at an incredible rate, the running game could’ve hurt the defense more.

BEST: TE Jake Tonges
Tonges continues to be one of the best insurance policies in the league. Stepping up without George Kittle, Tonges caught seven passes for 60 yards and a touchdown. The 49ers may want to give him an extension this offseason instead of a tender.
