Not only have coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager/president of football operations John Lynch not seen or heard from Brandon Aiyuk in a while, but neither have his 49ers teammates.
Veteran wide receiver Kendrick Bourne joined former NFL players LeSean McCoy and Emmanuel Acho on the latest episode of their “Speakeasy” podcast, and was asked about Aiyuk’s presence, or lack thereof, in the 49ers’ building this season.
“When I first got in the building, I missed Week 1,” Bourne said. “I saw him a little bit, so I didn’t really know what was going on,” Bourne said. “I was just pouring into him like, ‘Hey, man, how are you doing?’ Seeing him in the sauna sometimes, rehabbing. Then all the things happened.
“So he’s MIA, too, within the building, man. So it’s been tough. I’ve been praying for him, man, because I know how tough it is when you’re chasing certain things and what you gain. So it’s concerning. It’s very concerning. So all I can really do is pray for him.”
It seems nobody in the 49ers organization has seen Aiyuk around the facility in months, outside of the viral video the disgruntled wideout posted on YouTube of him speeding past the Levi’s Stadium in a car he was test-driving.
“We ain’t seen him,” Bourne added. “We all seen him in the car speeding.”
The 49ers voided guarantees in Aiyuk’s contract earlier this season for incidents that happened over the summer before placing him on the reserve/left squad list on Dec. 13, which officially ended his season.
With Aiyuk likely to be released in the offseason, teammates like Bourne and others might have seen, and heard, from the star wideout for the final time.
