The contract saga between the Cincinnati Bengals and Trey Hendrickson is far removed from talk about trades at this point.

Hendrickson, after all, showed up at a practice and gave a long interview about his unhappiness with the situation. A report later seemed to hint at what the Bengals have offered him so far.

Even so, that won’t stop onlookers from suggesting trade fits, such as ESPN’s Matt Bowen listing the Green Bay Packers as a logical landing spot:

“After being granted permission to seek a trade in March, Hendrickson is refusing to play with the Bengals until he receives a new contract. If no deal comes together, Green Bay would be the perfect landing spot for him, as he’d pair well with Rashan Gary in Jeff Hafley’s defensive system. Lukas Van Ness, a 2023 first-rounder, is still developing at this stage, so there is a path for Green Bay to add more to its defensive line.”

While the on-field fit might make sense for the Packers, it’s all the other stuff around Hendrickson that causes problems.

The Bengals, after all, gave Hendrickson permission to seek a trade and it never materialized before or during the draft. An All-Pro, NFL sacks leader at the age of 30 is a costly thing to acquire via trade — before giving him north of $30 million per year over multiple seasons.

Bengals fans have been down this road with Hendrickson a few times now and know that the likely result is a resolution that keeps him in Cincinnati.
