Cameron Wolfe gave an insight into the Dolphins quarterback plans next season
The Miami Dolphins will face off against the New England Patriots as they hope to avoid double-digit losses for the first time since 2019. Following the 2019 season, the Dolphins opted to draft a new quarterback to guide Miami into the future.
Now, after Tua Tagovailoa was benched following their Week 15 loss on Monday Night Football, it seems like the Dolphins are once again without a franchise quarterback on the roster. Rookie seventh-round pick Quinn Ewers has made his claim for that job over the previous two weeks as he’s gone 1-1. He threw for two touchdowns and had no turnovers in their previous win.
Dolphins’ Plans Revealed
Before entering the final week of the season, reports are beginning to surface as to what the Dolphins plan to do in the offseason. NFL Network insider Cameron Wolfe reported that the expectation is the Dolphins will try to move off quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who has a $54 million cap hit, although Tagovailoa returning to the team in 2026 has not been ruled out. However, Wolfe did reveal that the Dolphins plan to bring in competition for the starting job next year.
At the moment, the job belongs to Quinn Ewers. The rookie quarterback is 39-for-60 with 485 passing yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions in three appearances. He will have one more start this season to prove to the Dolphins staff that he’s the man for the job going forward. Head coach Mike McDaniel was asked about Ewers potentially leading the team going forward. He said, “He has the ability to lead this team… he can lead this team to victory.”
Ultimately, McDaniel may not be involved in the decision of who the quarterback will be going forward as his own future is currently undecided. Cameron Wolfe also reported that the new general manager, alongside owner Stephen Ross, will decide whether McDaniel returns for the 2026 season with the Dolphins.
Additionally, the Dolphins also announced a new quarterback has entered the mix as they signed rookie Cam Miller off the Raiders’ practice squad. Miller has yet to play an NFL snap, but was drafted in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft after minority owner Tom Brady was impressed with him. Former first-round pick Zach Wilson is also on the Dolphins roster, however, he’s set to be a free-agent following the season.
Dolphins Regular Season Finale
Ewers will have a tough task in his last starting appearance of the season. He’ll take on a Patriots defense that ranks fifth in the NFL in points allowed. The Patriots will also be highly motivated as they still have an outside shot of being the AFC’s top seed in the playoffs. While the Dolphins have been mathematically eliminated, the game on Sunday represents one final chance for Ewers and McDaniel to prove why they deserve their current job heading into the 2026 season.
If Wolfe’s report turns out to be true, the 2026 season will mark the first quarterback competition the Dolphins have had since the 2020 season when Ryan Fitzpatrick and rookie Tua Tagovailoa competed for the starting job. Fitzpatrick won the competition, although he was replaced by Tagovailoa halfway through the year.
