The San Francisco 49ers have added two young studs to their front seven this offseason, selecting Georgia defensive end Mykel Williams with their first-round pick and Texas defensive tackle Alfred Collins with their second. These two could be two cornerstones of the next great 49ers front.

However, San Francisco also lost key contributors to the group this offseason, including linebacker Dre Greenlaw, edge rusher Leonard Floyd, and defensive tackles Javon Hargrave and Maliek Collins. Greenlaw and Floyd signed with the Denver Broncos and Atlanta Falcons, respectively. Hargrave landed with the Minnesota Vikings and Collins signed with the Cleveland Browns.

As we near the end of May, there’s still plenty of time left in the offseason, and teams could add or subtract pieces to or from their roster before Week 1. It’s the job of NFL analysts and pundits to determine who could be on the move, and Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox recently speculated that 49ers edge rusher Yetur Gross-Matos could be out in the coming months.

Gross-Matos, 27, played his college ball at Penn State from 2017-19, earning First-team All-Big Ten honors twice while recording 111 tackles (37 for a loss), 19 sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries in 38 games for the Nittany Lions.

The Carolina Panthers selected Gross-Matos in the second round (No. 38 overall) of the 2020 NFL draft, but it took him a while to earn consistent playing time on the edge. When he became a full-time starter in 2022, his numbers didn’t see a dramatic jump; in fact, he recorded fewer sacks that year than he did the year prior, despite playing nearly 500 more snaps.

After seeing some better results (4.5 sacks) in 12 games in 2023, Gross-Matos inked a two-year, $18 million deal with the 49ers last offseason. He went on to play in just 11 games last season due to a knee injury and recorded a career-low 19 tackles (six for a loss), seven quarterback hits and four sacks.

With Williams and Nick Bosa on the edge, Gross-Matos may end up with a smaller role in 2025, and if that’s the case, San Francisco may feel comfortable moving on from him and saving $4.82 million in cap space by cutting him after June 1.
