In moves made to clarify the front office power structure, the Titans have redefined the roles of General Manager Mike Borgonzi and President of Football Operations Chad Brinker.
The team announced Friday that Borgonzi will now have final say on the team’s 53-man roster. Brinker had previously held that responsibility.
In addition, Borgonzi will spearhead the Titans’ head coaching search and oversee the coaching staff.
Borgonzi and Brinker will each report to Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk now, whereas Borgonzi and the team’s head coach had previously reported to Brinker.
Brinker will still remain very involved with the team, leading strategic functions including salary cap management, analytics, research and development, and other football departments.
The titles of both Borgonzi and Brinker will remain the same.
“Both will report to me, and their collective goal is to return the football team to the championship caliber you deserve,” Strunk said in a letter to Titans fans.
The changes illustrate the increased organizational influence of Borgonzi, the former Kansas City assistant general manager who was hired by Brinker less than a year ago.
The Titans have basically been operating under the current format for the past few months, but made the changes official heading into the team’s season finale at Jacksonville.
“Over the past few years, several job descriptions in our football organization were established to address specific situations and challenges that existed at the time,” Strunk said in the letter. “After working together for the past year, [Brinker and Borgonzi] believe—and I agree—there there is a long-term benefit to clarifying and honing the focus areas of our football leadership.
“For that reason, we’re returning to a front office that feels more straightforward to them and me … Both [Brinker and Borgonzi] will report to me, and their collective goal is to return the football team to the championship caliber you deserve.”
