Packers quarterback Clayton Tune talks about starting vs. the Vikings

Green Bay Packers quarterback Clayton Tune discusses the opportunity to start to close the regular season.

The Green Bay Packers will turn to Clayton Tune – essentially, their third-stringer – as their starting quarterback in the regular-season finale against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, Jan. 4.

With their playoff spot clinched and their No. 7 seed in the NFC set, the Packers will be looking to get through the game as healthy as possible.

Tune was drafted by the Arizona Cardinals in the fifth round out of Houston in 2023. He was signed to the Packers practice squad in late August, was elevated to the game-day roster Dec. 27 and was added to the 53-man roster Dec. 31.

He played briefly in relief of Malik Willis in the Packers’ 41-24 loss to Baltimore on Dec. 27, completing one of four passes for eight yards, with one pass going through receiver Bo Melton’s hands for an interception.

Here’s more about the Packers’ quarterback situation for the Vikings game:

Is Jordan Love going to play? What’s Jordan Love’s injury status?

Love, the Packers’ No. 1 quarterback, has cleared concussion protocol after missing the Ravens game, but coach Matt LaFleur said Thursday, Jan. 1, “The intent, I would say, is not to play him.”

LaFleur said he’s leaving open the possibility of Love playing if Tune were to get hurt.

Love left the Packers’ Dec. 20 loss in Chicago with a concussion in the second quarter. He was a full participant in practice Wednesday, Dec. 31, his first time practicing without limitations since the concussion.

Is Malik Willis going to play? What’s Malik Willis’ injury status?

Willis’ status for the game is uncertain, LaFleur said. On the Packers’ injury report Thursday, Jan. 2, he’s listed as questionable because of shoulder and hamstring injuries.

Willis, the Packers’ No. 2 quarterback, left the Ravens game with the right shoulder injury midway through the fourth quarter after initially hurting it against the Bears.

What’s the Packers QB depth chart for the Vikings game? Who’s the Packers’ backup QB? Who’s the Packers’ third-string QB?

With LaFleur saying it’s “to be determined” who will back up Tune, the rest of the Packers’ depth chart at quarterback is up in the air.

Besides Love and Willis, Green Bay also has veteran Desmond Ridder, signed this week to the practice squad. He has been on the Vikings’ practice squad twice this season.

If LaFleur doesn’t want Love or Willis to potentially play, Ridder could be elevated to the game-day roster as the backup.
