PHILADELPHIA — With the No. 2 seed still dangling but most starters on the sideline, the Eagles’ backups couldn’t finish the job Sunday, falling 24-17 to the Washington Commanders in the regular-season finale at Lincoln Financial Field.
The third-seeded Birds (11-6) will host No. 6 San Francisco (12-5) in the NFC Wild Card round of the playoffs next weekend.
Here’s Sunday’s postgame report card by position group.
Quarterbacks: C
Tanner McKee flashed poise and arm talent while throwing for 241 yards and a touchdown, but a costly interception and uneven accuracy stalled multiple drives. It was his worst performance as an Eagle.
Running Backs: B
Opportunities were limited, and the ground game never found rhythm as the Eagles finished with just 82 rushing yards and too many second-and-long situations. Tank Bigsby averaged 4.7 yards but the Eagles stopped giving him the ball
Offensive Line: C-
With several starters resting, protection and run blocking were inconsistent, and breakdowns up front showed up at critical moments.
Tight Ends/Receivers: C-
Grant Calcaterra’s red-zone touchdown was a highlight, along with DeVonta Smith’s limited action early to crack 1,000 yards for the season, but the group mostly failed to find separation. McKee often had no one to throw to.
Defensive Line: C+
The front held up reasonably well with a rotating cast, generating pressure early but failing to consistently disrupt Washington as the game wore on.
Linebackers: B-
Steady but unspectacular, the group filled gaps and made tackles but couldn’t prevent Washington from leaning on the run in key stretches.
Cornerbacks/Safeties: D+
The secondary allowed too many chunk plays and surrendered a late touchdown that effectively sealed the outcome.
Special Teams: B+
Jake Elliott was steady and the coverage units did their job, keeping the Eagles competitive in field position throughout.
Coaching: C
The plan to rest starters was understandable, even in hindsight. But conservative decisions, a lack of offensive creativity and limited in-game adjustments left little margin for error.
