Missouri lawmakers target Chiefs with stadium bills

  • January 7, 2026

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KCTV) – Missouri lawmakers return to work Wednesday to debate stadiums and money through bills that don’t name Arrowhead Stadium but target the Chiefs’ current home.

The Chiefs announced on Dec. 22 that they would leave Arrowhead Stadium and go across state lines to Kansas to play in a domed stadium.

A state senator from St. Charles County pre-filed three bills focused on Kansas City, addressing issues from who pays for demolition to how much fans pay to see a game.

Demolition costs shift to teams

The first bill targets teams that lease stadiums holding more than 60,000 people. Those teams would pay for demolition if they leave Missouri.

Currently, Jackson County pays for demolition if the Chiefs leave. County Executive Phil Levota says the contract still stands.

A second bill bans tax credits for teams playing in stadiums that hold at least 75,000 people. Only one professional team in Missouri meets that criteria — the Chiefs.

Ticket and concession fees added

A third bill charges $50 on every ticket for teams planning to leave Missouri. It also adds a 5% charge on purchases inside the stadium.

The bills were authored and pre-filed by Sen. Nick Schroer, a republican from St. Charles County. In a statement to KCTV5, he wrote:

“The Kansas City Chiefs, as well as the NFL, have shown zero loyalty to the people of Missouri. That being said, it is well past time that the legislature should come together and reevaluate many of these failed tax credits and incentives the team receives. Further, there is zero plan to have the Chiefs, their owners, or the NFL, to demolish the stadium, leaving Missouri taxpayers with the bill to demolish and an empty stadium. Therefore, these bills are aimed at protecting taxpayers, preparing for the Chiefs moving to a state willing to screw their taxpayers just to call them their own team, and reevaluate special treatment they receive in light of them giving our citizens the middle finger.”
