Kliff Kingsbury prpbably isn’t what the Eagles need, but even if they were interested, there’s an obstacle.

Black Monday certainly started early. Raheem Morris’s bad news was delivered on Sunday evening, and if you stretch back to two mid-season changes at head coach for a couple of other organizations, NFL franchises are a lot more impatient than they used to be. He takes heat sometimes, but be thankful the Philadelphia Eagles have Nick Sirianni. Things can always be worse than discussing him.

Speaking of the coaching in the NFC East, there have been massive changes. Philadelphia was the only organization not to fire its defensive coordinator on Monday. The Eagles’ most recent opponent, the Washington Commanders, is also now in the market for an offensive coordinator, as they gave Kliff Kingsbury his walking papers.

Nope! Don’t you do that! Stop it! We already know what some of you are thinking. You’ve grown tired of Kevin Patullo, and the wheels in your mind are turning.

We assure you that Kingsbury isn’t the answer, though some of you may clamor for it. As we learn more about him season by season, it’s easy to ask the question. Why was this guy given an NFL opportunity in the first place?

There’s no need to start a ‘Kliff Kingsbury to the Eagles’ fan club.

It seems like forever since this happened, but Kingsbury was given his first NFL head-coaching opportunity despite posting a 35-40 record as an NCAA head coach. He was given a chance after Steve Wilks was given a short leash.

He moved on from Josh Rosen before the poor guy could play a snap for him. His regime drafted Kyler Murray. This was Kingsbury’s show, and the show didn’t produce any fireworks.

His most memorable image in Arizona was the photo of him at his beautiful home during the NFL Draft, held amid the COVID-19 outbreak, when we were confined to our homes. The Cardinals moved on from him after he notched a 28-37-1 record.

His team made one playoff appearance. That was a loss, and after a stint with the USC Trojans in 2023 as their senior offensive analyst, he was hired as the Washington Commanders‘ offensive coordinator.

But, if you remember, he made a pit stop first. He also interviewed for the same position with Philadelphia.

There’s an obvious obstacle to having a serious conversation about bringing Kliff Kingsbury to the Eagles, aside from Kevin Patullo’s employment.

So, here’s where we bring this conversation full circle to you, Kliff Kingsbury enthusiasts. Just in case you’ve forgotten, we’ve visited this idea before.

The Eagles spoke with Kingsbury about their then-vacant offensive coordinator job in 2024. Things seemed to be going well, but Kingsbury expressed his desire to bring in his own offensive line coach and staff. That meant Philadelphia would have to move on from Jeff Stoutland.

Yeah. That certainly wasn’t about to happen. Philadelphia went with another plan, hiring Kellen Moore. That turned out to be a wise decision.

Chip Kelly didn’t do a lot right during his time as Eagles head coach. He did nail one hire, though. He added Jeff Stoutland. The rest, as they say, is history.

Coach Stoutland has survived two head-coaching changes. He has turned good players into Pro Bowlers (see Brandon Brooks). He turns Pro Bowlers into All-Pros and future Pro Football Hall of Famers. Look no further than Jordan Mailata, Jason Peters, Landon Dickerson, Cam Jurgens, Lane Johnson, and others.

Kingsbury remains an enigma. Seen by many as an offensive genius, we can spend more time discussing what he didn’t do than what he did.

Yes, Murray looked okay for a while. Yes, he helped elevate Jayden Daniels to becoming the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year, but here’s a question. Was that more about Kingsbury or Daniels?

Oh well… You guys can argue that among yourselves. The job here was to stop Kingsbury rumors before they began. Besides, Philadelphia already has an offensive coordinator. The night’s watch has now ended. We’re moving on to other things now.
