Last week, the San Francisco 49ers and quarterback Brock Purdy agreed to a massive five-year, $265 million extension with $181 million in total guarantees and $165.95 million in the first three years of the deal, tying the franchise and their captain together for the next six seasons.

The deal will pay him $53 million per year, putting him tied for seventh in average annual value with Jared Goff and behind Dak Prescott ($60 million), Trevor Lawrence ($55 million), Jordan Love ($55 million), Josh Allen ($55 million), Joe Burrow ($55 million) and Tua Tagovailoa ($53.1 million).

Just days later, Pro Football Focus’ John Kosko released his latest 2025 NFL quarterback rankings, and Purdy came in at No. 11. Ahead of Purdy on this list, in order, were Patrick Mahomes, Burrow, Lamar Jackson, Allen, Jalen Hurts, Jayden Daniels, Matthew Stafford, Justin Herbert, Goff and Geno Smith.

In Purdy’s 40 professional games, he’s completed 67.5% of his passes for 9,518 yards, 64 touchdowns and 27 interceptions. He’s also helped lead the 49ers to a 23-13 record in his 36 starts and took them to the Super Bowl in 2023, which also happened to be his lone Pro Bowl season, as he led the league in passer rating (113.0).

Purdy doesn’t get the credit he deserves. He’s seen as a system quarterback who is only playing well because he’s playing for head coach Kyle Shanahan and has thrown to Deebo Samuel, Brandon Aiyuk and George Kittle. However, Purdy can’t control who drafted him, who his coach is or who he’s throwing to. If people are asking questions about Purdy’s success, other quarterbacks ahead of him on this list should be facing questions as well.

We’ve seen other quarterbacks have a strong first year and then struggle the next year (see: Stroud, C.J.). Is it too early to have Daniels ranked No. 6 in the NFL after a stellar rookie season? Smith saw his career revitalize in Seattle while throwing to DK Metcalf, Tyler Lockett and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Will things be as good for him with the Las Vegas Raiders when his best wide receiver is Jakobi Meyers? Goff has seen different levels of success with Sean McVay and Ben Johnson calling his offenses, but what happens now with another new coordinator?

Purdy has proved through three seasons to be around the 10th-best quarterback in the league, and he’ll have another opportunity to get himself into that top 10 this year.
