The Miami Dolphins finished their hunt for a new general manager Friday when they announced former Green Bay Packers vice president of player personnel Jon-Eric Sullivan will take over as the lead executive.
Sullivan’s first order of business is to find the head coach who will lead the team on the field.
With a quarter of the league hunting for new head coaches this offseason, the Dolphins have a few significant disadvantages. The team’s uncertainty at quarterback and salary cap restraints could mean Miami is at least a couple years away from being a serious contender.
On the other hand, the job comes with South Florida sunshine and lack of state income taxes. Couple that with an organization that consistently earns rave reviews from the NFLPA and has shown a willingness to be patient with its leaders, and it could add up to an intriguing opportunity for a coach.
Here we’ll be tracking all the updates on the Dolphins’ search:
Expert NFL picks: Exclusive betting insights only at USA TODAY. John Harbaugh will narrow options before interviewing for vacancies
The Dolphins are reportedly interested in John Harbaugh, but so is just about every other team with a vacancy. Instead of interviewing with every team that makes a request, Harbaugh plans to narrow his options to “around three or four teams” over the weekend before scheduling any talks, according to ESPN.
Aside from the Ravens, the Dolphins are one of seven teams with a vacancy along with the Cardinals, Falcons, Browns, Raiders, Giants, and Titans.
Dolphins to interview Rams DC Chris Shula
According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Dolphins will interview Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula.
Shula is the grandson of Dolphins legendary coach Don Shula, but has made a name for himself during his time with the Rams. The 39-year-old coach worked his way up through the team’s ranks after joining as an assistant linebackers coach in 2017. This season, in his second as the Rams’ DC, Shula’s unit was No. 10 in points allowed, forced the fifth most takeaways, and allowed a league-best eight touchdown passes.
Dolphins request interview with 49ers DC Robert Saleh
Saleh was one of the top coaching candidates in 2021 after four years of leading the 49ers defense to some stellar numbers. But four years as the New York Jets didn’t pan out well for Saleh.
Now he’s back with San Francisco and his work as a coordinator has again earned him head coaching consideration, including a request to interview with the Dolphins, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Dolphins interviewing Seahawks OC Klint Kubiak
Kubiak, who coached a Seahawks offense that was No. 3 in points scored, is being interviewed by the Dolphins on Saturday, according to NFL reporter Jordan Schultz.
Dolphins expected to meet with Kevin Stefanski in the next week
The former Cleveland Browns coach is receiving plenty of interest with the Titans, Giants, Raiders, and Ravens all in the mix. According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the Dolphins are tossing their name in the hat and are expected to meet with the coach soon.
Dolphins express interest in John Harbaugh
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Dolphins didn’t contact Harbaugh about their head coaching job when Mike McDaniel was still at the helm. They did, however, reach out Friday after finalizing their deal with Sullivan.
Jon-Eric Sullivan to lead search with Troy Aikman still advising
The Dolphins’ search team for a new general manager reportedly included Aikman and fellow Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino. While the exact group that’ll hunt for a new head coach hasn’t been revealed, it will reportedly include Aikman again.
