NFL legend Troy Aikman has dropped a cryptic hint over whether he’d be interested in a permanent role after serving as a consultant to the Miami Dolphins during their General Manager search.
The Dolphins are undergoing massive changes this offseason, with vacant posts at general manager and head coach following Mike McDaniel’s firing. Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa’s future is also unclear, having been benched for rookie Quinn Ewers at the back end of the Dolphins’ 7-10 regular season.
Amid uncertainty, the Dolphins turned to three-time Super Bowl winner and now ESPN TV personality, Aikman, to serve as a consultant in their search for a new GM. Aikman helped advise the Dolphins, and it appears the NFL franchise is leaning toward naming Jon-Eric Sullivan as their next GM, which could have significant implications in the race to hire free agent head coach John Harbaugh, who parted ways with the Miami Dolphins after the Baltimore Ravens missed the 2025 playoffs.

However, Aikman’s short-term gig with the Dolphins has raised reasonable questions over whether he’d be interested in a permanent front office role in the NFL. The ex-Dallas Cowboys superstar remains a respected figure in the league.
Aikman expressed his enjoyment of his experience with the Dolphins and told The Musers on The Ticket in Dallas, “We’ll see” whether he could be interested in a front office position. “At first, I wanted to make sure I could provide them what it was that they were hoping I could,” Aikman said.
“Gave it some thought and then, as I dove into it, talked with more people, I became more and more confident that I could. So, off we went, and it’s been great. We’ll see where this might go, but I’ve really enjoyed it.”

Aikman was on hand in Miami to conduct in-person interviews and examine candidates vying for the position, which will come with many different challenges, considering the state of the Dolphins, particularly financially.
For example, Tagovailoa’s contract carries a massive dead-cap hit for the Dolphins, which will make it difficult to trade the quarterback, who has struggled in recent seasons, as well as battle concussion setbacks.
“It made sense primarily because I feel like I’ve got access to unique information, and in addition to that, unique experiences,” Aikman continued.

“From the broadcasting side of it, I’ve made so many relationships around the league after 25 years and have a number of friends, whether it’s GMs, head coaches, offensive coordinators. So, that’s what Miami really wanted to tap into, and I feel like it has served them well.”
The Dolphins are reportedly one of the teams interested in Harbaugh. However, whether the franchise will be able to meet Harbaugh’s four considerable demands is another matter.
ESPN claims Harbaugh is seeking a $20 million annual salary, a $10 million budget to assemble his coaching staff, complete control over roster decisions, and the authority to select his next general manager at his future destination.
