DETROIT – Calvin Johnson Jr., National Football Hall of Fame wide receiver and Detroit Lions legend, recently spoke candidly about smoking weed throughout his NFL career on the St. Brown Podcast with fellow Lions receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown and his brother Equanimeous St. Brown.
When asked if he ever played games while “faded,” Johnson confirmed he did, especially in the latter part of his career.
Johnson Jr., a.k.a. Megatron, explained that he sometimes smoked before games to help him get through the physical and mental challenges.
Megatron described his routine on game days, including using a hyperbaric chamber to recover and prepare.
Despite playing while under the influence, Johnson Jr. said he often had good games and was careful about when and how much he consumed.
Cannabis company
The conversation shifted to Johnson’s cannabis company, Primitive, which he founded, inspired by his personal experience with cannabis as a player.
Megatron emphasized the plant’s benefits for recovery and pain management, citing scientific research supporting its medicinal properties.
Failure of 2025 season
Johnson Jr. also reflected on the Lions’ recent season, discussing injuries and inconsistent play as key factors in missing the playoffs.
He encouraged fans to appreciate the current team’s potential and that the Super Bowl window is still open.
