Deuce Gruden and the record books agreed to rewrite history on Saturday. After a successful lift in Las Vegas, Gruden, the son of former Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Las Vegas Raiders head coach Jon Gruden, will hold the national title for the bench press.

In the 83 kg Open Raw division at the National Championships, the competitor registered a 219.5 kg lift (483.9 lbs) on his third attempt. The lift led Deuce Gruden to a new Powerlifting America National Record in the weight class.

“My son Deuce broke the powerlifting record last night for his weight class in Las Vegas! 483-pound bench press!” the former HC Jon Gruden wrote on X.

Gruden finished with successful attempts of 200 kg and 212.5 kg, while adding a record-breaking 219.5 kg to clear the mark.

Deuce also won gold at the IPF World Classic Powerlifting Championships in the 83 kg Junior division.

He served as an assistant strength and conditioning coach for Washington during the 2016 and 2017 seasons. After the 2017 season with Washington, Gruden left to join his father’s staff on the Oakland Raiders.

Deuce, who continued in this assistant role as the franchise relocated to Las Vegas, remained with the team through 2024.

Jeremy Fowler of ESPN reported last week that NFL teams may consider hiring Jon Gruden as a head coach due to a shortage of offensive candidates.

“It wouldn’t shock me if teams wanted to speak with Gruden, assuming his lawsuit will reach a conclusion at some point,” Fowler wrote. “In a year with limited offensive options, this would be the time. His imprint is still all over the NFL coaching landscape.”

Along with his legal battle, the former coach has also maintained connections to the sport as a consultant for the New Orleans Saints after leaving the Las Vegas Raiders.

Gruden also serves as a part-owner and consultant for the Nashville Kats, further establishing himself in the Arena Football One league.
