GREEN BAY, Wis. (WBAY) – The Green Bay Packers want to keep head coach Matt LaFleur, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter’s sources.
This comes despite the team’s collapse in the second half of their playoff game and the last games of the season. The Packers went 9-8-1 last season.
The Packers made six postseason appearances in LaFleur’s seven seasons in Green Bay. Under his coaching, the Packers are 76-40-1 in the regular season but 3-6 in postseason games. They haven’t reached the conference championship since 2020.
It’s unclear what a deal would look like for LaFleur, who has one year remaining on his contract, or if it would require some guarantees from the head coach.
Schefter and On the Clock contributor Rob Demovsky report Packers president Ed Policy said before the start of the last season that he does not want a “lame duck” coach.
Demovsky said during On the Clock on WBAY-TV Sunday night, “When they fired Mike McCarthy, they didn’t know they were going to hire Matt LaFleur. Not many people knew that. Matt LaFleur blew them away during the interview. So to say if you fire him, you won’t find anyone better, the argument is that if you don’t believe he is the guy then you must make the change.”
Cover 2 analyst Bill Huber said, “He is 16th in NFL history in winning percentage. There’s like 9 hall of famers out of them. He’s won a lot of football games, like a lot of football games, and he gets you into the playoffs nearly every year, and if you get into the dance you have a shot. So that’d be the reason to keep him.“
LaFleur made it clear in his post-season news conference Sunday that he would like to stay in Green Bay.
“I love the people, I love our players, love the locker room, everyone in our organization. This is a unique place. The community has been outstanding. I’ve lived other places. I think this is a unique place, and it’s a special place. My kids love it here, and my family loves it here,” he said.
This is a developing story.
