Charles Huff and Lance Guidry teamed together at Marshall for one of the most monumental wins in Thundering Herd program history.

The two are on the verge of a reunion.

Sources tell FootballScoop that Huff is targeting to hire Guidry to run the defense of his first-year Memphis Tigers.

The two last worked together in the 2022 season at Marshall, when as double-digit underdogs Huff & Co. marched into Notre Dame Stadium to upset Marcus Freeman’s Fighting Irish as double-digit underdogs.

After that season, Guidry left for the defensive coordinator post in Mario Cristobal’s Miami Hurricanes program, a spot he held for two years. Guidry was a senior defensive analyst for Blake Baker at LSU in 2025.

More recently, Guidry had agreed to become JaMarcus Shephard’s inaugural defensive coordinator at Oregon State in the past month, also a reunion since Shephard and Guidry had been colleagues last decade at Western Kentucky.

However, Huff’s initial Memphis Tigers defensive coordinator — and the man who ran Huff’s defenses in his Sun Belt Championship-winning 2024 season at Marshall, as well as the 2025 season at Southern Miss — Jason Semore is working to finalize a deal for Brent Key’s Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets program, numerous sources told FootballScoop in a move also reported by several other media outlets.

Memphis hired Huff after the end of the 2025 regular season when the Tigers lost Ryan Silverfield to the top job at Arkansas. Silverfield won 29 games in his final three seasons at Memphis.

Huff had been linked to multiple jobs after his lone season at Southern Miss, getting traction with Tulane and then being swiftly hired in Memphis. He traces some of his earliest coaching roots to the Volunteer State from time on the staff of HBCU Football Championship Subdivision program Tennessee State as well as at Southeastern Conference program Vanderbilt under then-head coach James Franklin.

Guidry has run defenses at the FBS level at Western Kentucky, Marshall and Miami ; he also has FCS head coaching experience from time atop the McNeese State program.
