The future of Brian Flores has been the main storyline since the Minnesota Vikings‘ season ended last Sunday. But one of his top assistants could be leaving for a promotion, too.
Last week, Adam Schefter reported the New York Jets and Dallas Cowboys had requested an interview with Vikings assistant Daronte Jones for their defensive coordinator job.

Jones has spent the past four seasons with the Vikings. He served as Minnesota’s DB coach in 2022 when Kevin O’Connell was first hired, then added the passing game coordinator role when Flores was hired in 2023. Jones also served as DB coach on Mike Zimmer’s staff in 2020 before leaving Minnesota for LSU’s defensive coordinator job.
It is widely believed that Jones would be the most logical in-house coach to take the Vikings’ defensive coordinator job if Flores leaves. Jones called plays during the 2025 preseason, and Flores said that Jones will be a coordinator someday.
The sting of losing Jones won’t be as bad if Flores stays. But if the Vikings lose both, their search for a new defensive coordinator will become that much more difficult.
