The Pittsburgh Steelers were dealt a shock on Tuesday, as longtime head coach Mike Tomlin resigned from his post after 19 seasons with the team. The Steelers now need a new head coach, but the future for Tomlin is a bit murkier. If he wants to stay in the NFL, though, it sounds like at least one team is already interested in hiring him as its next head coach.
That team would be the Miami Dolphins, who fired head coach Mike McDaniel shortly after the end of the 2025 season. According to a report from NFL insider Josina Anderson, the Dolphins are going big-fish hunting when it comes to their head coach search, as they have both Tomlin and recently fired Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh atop their wish list.
“A league source indicated to me over a week ago … ‘John Harbaugh & Mike Tomlin are at the top of the (Miami Dolphins) wish list (at head coach),’” Anderson wrote in a post on X. “We’ll see…if the Dolphins can pull either off. It takes two to tango.”
While Harbaugh has made it known he immediately wants to land with a new team, Tomlin could opt to spend a year in the world of sports media before returning to coaching. If the right opportunity comes across his plate, though, could that result in him making another shocking move? Regardless of what happens, it’s clear Tomlin’s situation is worth keeping tabs on.
