The Baltimore Ravens are among good company. More than a quarter of the NFL shares the team’s current circumstances in the search for a new head coach. Unlike any of those other teams, however, we had a chance to hear from the man whose decision it will be to choose the next coach in Baltimore today. Team owner Steve Bisciotti, along with general manager Eric DeCosta met with the local press to talk about the state of affairs in Baltimore.
As the Ravens set out on their head coaching search, you should know one thing about how Baltimore is looking upon the candidates: they’ll be assessing coaches uniquely versus the pre-existing narrative around them. Because Baltimore is no typical job opening. Allow Bisciotti to explain.

“The very first thing that I said to Eric (DeCosta) and Sashi (Brown) was that unlike 18 years ago, I am very intrigued by coaches that were the hottest offensive and defensive coordinators from five, six or seven years ago in their cycles and got jobs and went to teams that were non-competitive and didn’t have a quarterback, and they grind for three or four years, and they’re caught up in the cycle…if our final candidate is an ex-coach who has a losing record, and you all are going to have to understand that we are going to be able to judge that failure with his circumstances and marry that up and not disqualify them…I think you have to remember that they were the hottest coaches in their cycle, and they got jobs and they got tough jobs, and I don’t think we have a tough job.
I think that we created the best opening in this cycle, and so, that was the one category that I didn’t want to ignore, because the first thing you all are going to say is, ‘My God, he went 38-48 in his last job, and they’re hiring him.’…we are keen to their circumstances, and we won’t let their first shot at a job influence us negatively for this one.”

First and foremost, he’s absolutely right to feel this way. These guys simply don’t forget how to coach. And the Ravens’ circumstances with the roster are so unique, it is hard to envision a first-time head coach building a team’s foundation and having anything close to what the Ravens are able to offer a coach.
It allows the hire to be about the fit. The culture and the attitude can be a much bigger piece of the puzzle when you don’t have to worry about a coach being apart of the development of a young quarterback, as just one example. The Ravens’ coaching search is unique in this way — and it’s empowering to know that ownership knows that going into the hunt.
